Full Description
Wulong Karst: a UNESCO landscape near Chongqing
Wulong District lies in the mountains south-east of Chongqing city, where the Wu River cuts through thick layers of limestone. Over millions of years, water dissolved the rock into caves, sinkholes and gorges, creating one of the most spectacular karst landscapes in China. In 2007 the Wulong Karst was inscribed by UNESCO as part of the South China Karst World Heritage site.
The drive from Chongqing takes about two and a half to three hours on mountain expressways. On the way, the vehicle stops for about 20 minutes at a viewpoint above the Wu River gorge, where emerald water winds between steep green cliffs. A Wulong day trip from Chongqing is a long day, but it is the easiest way to see these landscapes without staying overnight in the mountains.
The Three Natural Bridges (Tiansheng Sanqiao)
The Three Natural Bridges are huge limestone arches left standing when the roofs of ancient caves collapsed. Known as the Sky Dragon, Green Dragon and Black Dragon bridges, they span a gorge between deep sinkholes, rising more than 200 metres above the valley floor, and rank among the largest natural bridges in Asia. Walking beneath them, you feel how small people are compared with the power of water and time.
A cliffside lift takes you down into the sinkhole, and a paved trail of about three kilometres leads through the valley, under each bridge, past waterfalls and a rebuilt ancient-style courier inn, before a shuttle bus brings you back up. Allow about two hours. The trail has many steps, so good shoes matter; the best time to visit the Three Natural Bridges is spring or autumn, when the air is clear and the paths are dry.
Longshui Gorge Fissure
Longshui Gorge is a narrow slot canyon cut by a mountain stream, so deep and tight in places that the sky is only a thin strip above your head. After a lift down the cliff, walkways, stairs, bridges and plank paths fixed to the rock follow the water past waterfalls, clear green pools and fern-covered walls. It is cool and shady even in summer, a pleasant contrast after the open valley of the bridges.
The visit takes about two hours and is mostly downhill, with a shuttle at the end. Mist and spray make some steps wet, so walk carefully and keep your camera protected. If you prefer high meadows to canyons, another option in the booking panel replaces Longshui Gorge with Fairy Mountain National Forest Park, a plateau of grasslands and forests at about 2,000 metres.
Lunch in Wulong and the return to Chongqing
Around midday the group stops in a small mountain town near the scenic areas for lunch, which is not included. Your guide recommends local restaurants serving Chongqing-style dishes, river fish and mountain vegetables. Halal restaurants are rare in Wulong, so Muslim travellers may prefer to bring snacks or choose vegetarian dishes; in central Chongqing, halal restaurants run by Hui Muslim families are easy to find for dinner.
After Longshui Gorge the vehicle drives back to Chongqing, arriving around 20:30 depending on traffic, and drops you at your pickup point. How to get to Wulong from Chongqing on your own? Trains and buses exist, but tickets for the scenic areas, shuttles and lifts must be combined, which this tour handles for you. Expect a full, rewarding 13-hour day.
