Full Description

Zhujiajiao water town

Zhujiajiao lies in Qingpu District, about an hour's drive west of central Shanghai, and is one of the best-preserved old canal towns in the region. It grew rich in the Ming and Qing dynasties as a trading town for rice and cotton cloth, and its old streets still follow the canals, lined with wooden shopfronts, tea houses, craft stalls and snack sellers, while a Buddhist temple and a small classical garden hide behind the houses.

The landmark is Fangsheng Bridge, built in the sixteenth century: five stone arches spanning the main canal, the largest stone arch bridge in the Shanghai area. On a private Zhujiajiao tour, arriving in the morning means calmer lanes and soft light on the water. Allow about two hours here, including the boat ride, with time to explore the lanes at your own pace.

Boat ride on the Zhujiajiao canals

The boat ride is included and is the best way to understand a water town. A wooden boat, rowed with a single long oar at the stern, carries you along the main canal and into narrower side waterways, under arched bridges and past houses whose back doors open directly onto the water, with steps where residents still wash vegetables and moor their boats.

Your guide explains how life in these towns was organised around the water, from trade and transport to festivals. The ride lasts about 20 to 30 minutes. Afterwards you stop for lunch, which is not included; tell your guide your dietary needs, as Shanghai and Suzhou both have halal (qingzhen) restaurants run by Hui families and your guide can suggest one along the way.

A classical garden in Suzhou

In the afternoon, your driver takes you on to Suzhou, about one and a quarter hours away, for its famous UNESCO-listed classical gardens. One entrance ticket is included. Most visitors choose the Humble Administrator's Garden, the largest, with its broad ponds, lotus, covered walkways and pavilions; if you prefer something smaller and quieter, choose the Master of the Nets Garden, the Lingering Garden or the Lion Forest Garden with its rockery maze.

Each garden is a landscape in miniature, designed for contemplation, where windows frame views like paintings and rocks stand in for mountains. Allow about one and a half hours with your guide. Additional garden visits are possible for a supplement, and the order of the day can be adjusted if you would rather see Suzhou first.

Suzhou's canal quarter and extra stops

Next, explore the old canal waterways of Suzhou, where whitewashed houses with black-tiled roofs line the water, stone bridges arch over the canals and small water markets, craft shops and snack stalls keep the lanes lively. It is a lovely contrast to Zhujiajiao: larger, more urban, but with the same harmony of water and architecture.

Depending on time and your interests, your guide can add Panmen Gate, a rare combined water and land gate of the old city wall, the tall North Temple Pagoda, or Tiger Hill with its leaning brick pagoda. Entry to these extra sites is paid on the day. The tour covers about nine hours including driving; extra hours can be arranged for a supplement if you want to see more.

How to get there and the best time to visit

How to get to Zhujiajiao and Suzhou from Shanghai? By road, in your private vehicle: about one hour from central Shanghai to Zhujiajiao, about one and a quarter hours from Zhujiajiao to Suzhou, and one and a half to two hours from Suzhou back to your hotel, depending on traffic. There are no train changes or taxis to worry about.

Pickup is between 08:30 and 11:30 at your choice. The best time to visit these water towns is spring and autumn, when the weather is mild; summer is hot and humid with frequent showers, and winter is cold but quiet. Weekends and Chinese public holidays are crowded, so a weekday and an early start make the most of the day.
