Full Description

Zhouzhuang water town: Venice of the East

Zhouzhuang lies in Kunshan, between Shanghai and Suzhou, about an hour and a half by road from central Shanghai. The town took its present name more than 900 years ago, in the Song dynasty, and grew rich in the Ming and Qing dynasties as a trading port for rice, silk and grain on the waterways of the Yangtze delta. Because it was surrounded by lakes and canals, it escaped much of the modern rebuilding that changed other towns.

Today Zhouzhuang keeps a dense web of canals lined with whitewashed houses, black-tiled roofs, carved wooden windows and old stone bridges. Grand merchant mansions with deep courtyards show how wealthy families lived, while a temple on the southern lake adds a pagoda to the skyline. A Zhouzhuang day trip from Shanghai is the easiest way to see the classic water-town scenery that appears on so many Chinese paintings.

The Twin Bridges and a boat ride on Zhouzhuang's canals

The symbol of Zhouzhuang is the Twin Bridges, built in the Ming dynasty where two canals meet: one has a round arch and the other a square opening, and together they look like an old Chinese key. Nearby, the Fu'an Bridge is unusual for the small towers at each end, where people once sat to drink tea and watch the boats. Your guide leads you to the best viewpoints and tells the stories behind them.

The boat ride is the heart of the visit. A local boatwoman, often dressed in blue-and-white printed cloth, rows you slowly along the canals, under the bridges and past waterside homes and shops, and sometimes sings a folk song from the water country. The ride lasts about 20 to 30 minutes, and it is the best way to understand how life here was built around the water.

Lunch in Zhouzhuang and the flavours of the water country

A local lunch in Zhouzhuang is included, usually in a family-style restaurant near the canals. The cooking of southern Jiangsu is light and slightly sweet, built on what the lakes and fields provide: river fish and shrimp, fresh green vegetables, tofu, rice and seasonal specialities. In autumn the region is famous for freshwater crabs from the nearby Yangcheng Lake.

Please tell us about dietary needs when you book, such as halal, vegetarian, no pork or allergies, so that we can arrange suitable dishes; fully halal kitchens are limited in the water towns, while halal (qingzhen) restaurants run by Hui Muslim families are easier to find in Suzhou and Shanghai. Lunch is also a good moment to rest, ask your guide questions and enjoy the view of the canal.

The Humble Administrator's Garden in Suzhou

After lunch you drive about 50 minutes to Suzhou, a canal city more than 2,500 years old whose classical gardens are listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. The Humble Administrator's Garden, created in the early 16th century, is the largest of them, with lotus ponds, island pavilions, zigzag bridges, a covered bridge reflected in the water and a bonsai garden of miniature trees.

Your guide explains the ideas behind the design: how rocks stand for mountains, water for rivers, and how windows and doorways frame views like scroll paintings. Plan about an hour and a half here. If you would rather see a smaller garden, tell your guide during the drive; entry to one garden is included, and additional gardens can be added at extra cost. Spring and autumn are the best time to visit Suzhou's gardens.

Pingjiang Road: old Suzhou along the canal

The day ends on Pingjiang Road, a narrow stone lane running beside a canal in the east of Suzhou's old town. Its layout of street, canal and houses has barely changed since a city map was carved on stone in the 13th century, and today it is lined with small teahouses, craft shops, embroidery studios and courtyard museums, including one dedicated to kunqu, the classical opera of Suzhou.

You stroll the lane at your own pace with your guide, cross its little bridges and watch boats pass beneath the willows. A ride in a traditional pedicab can be arranged at extra cost. Then the private vehicle takes you back to your hotel in Shanghai, about one and a half to two hours away depending on traffic, after a full and relaxed private Suzhou tour.
