Full Description
Suzhou's classical gardens
Suzhou is China's garden city, and its classical gardens, listed by UNESCO, are the main reason for a Suzhou day trip from Shanghai. The suggested choice is the Humble Administrator's Garden, the largest of them, created in the early sixteenth century around a chain of ponds, with pavilions, zigzag bridges, lake rockeries and bonsai courtyards. Your guide explains the symbolism of each view, from the shape of a window to the placement of a rock.
If you prefer something more intimate, swap it for the Master of the Nets Garden, a jewel of balanced proportions, the Lingering Garden with its towering lake stone, or the Lion Forest Garden with its maze of rockeries. Entrance tickets are not included and are paid on the day, so you are free to visit one garden or two, depending on your interest.
The canal quarter and Guanqian Street
Next, your guide leads you into the old canal quarter, where narrow waterways run between whitewashed houses and stone-paved lanes, with small water markets, craft stalls and local snack shops. Some visitors dress in traditional costumes for photos, which gives the lanes a festive feel, and the Jiangnan architecture of black tiles and white walls is at its most photogenic here.
Lunch is usually taken around Guanqian Street, a lively pedestrian street in the centre that blends old shopfronts with modern life. Lunch is not included, which lets you choose: tell your guide your dietary needs and they recommend a place. Suzhou has halal (qingzhen) noodle restaurants run by Hui families, so a halal meal is easy to find.
Tiger Hill and its leaning pagoda
In the afternoon, your driver takes you to Tiger Hill, on the north-western edge of the city, a small wooded hill that has drawn visitors for more than a thousand years. At its top stands the Cloud Rock Pagoda, an octagonal brick tower completed in the tenth century that leans noticeably to one side, earning it a nickname as China's leaning tower.
Around the hill are a dramatic split rock, a sheer-sided pool and terraces of stone, each linked to local legends your guide will share. Allow about an hour and a half. Is Tiger Hill worth visiting? If you enjoy history and calm green spaces, yes, and it is easily reached by private vehicle, which is where a dedicated driver makes the day so smooth.
Shantang Street and the Grand Canal
From Tiger Hill, Shantang Street follows a canal back towards the old city, its restored eastern section lined with red lanterns, carved wooden houses and bridges such as the little bridge local people cross for good fortune. It is one of the most charming places in Suzhou in the late afternoon.
If you wish, take the optional boat ride along the Grand Canal, the great waterway that has carried goods between north and south China for well over a thousand years and is now a World Heritage Site. It is paid on the day. Other swaps include Panmen Gate, the Suzhou Museum, the Suzhou Silk Museum or a temple such as the West Garden Temple; your guide adapts the plan to your pace.
