Full Description

The Southern Great Wall of Linhai

The Southern Great Wall, also called the Jiangnan Great Wall or the Taizhou city wall, encircled the ancient prefectural city of Linhai. Its first sections date back to the Jin dynasty in the fourth century, and it was rebuilt and enlarged over the following dynasties. Unusually, it had two jobs: defending the city and holding back the floods of the Ling River, which is why its riverside sections have rounded bastions designed to deflect the water.

In the Ming dynasty the wall was strengthened against coastal raiders, and two-storey enemy towers were added. That design was later used on the Ming Great Wall north of Beijing, which is why Linhai's wall is often called the model for the northern one. Today about five kilometres of walkable wall remain, making a Southern Great Wall day trip from Shanghai the closest true Great Wall experience to the city.

Walking the Wall over Mount Beigu

The most impressive stretch climbs over Mount Beigu, a wooded hill on the northern edge of the old town. The path follows the crest with stone steps, crenellated parapets and watchtowers, and one steep section is known locally as the slope of the brave. From the towers you look down on the tiled roofs of the old city, the curve of the Ling River and the green hills beyond.

Walking the full length takes about two to three hours at a comfortable pace, with plenty of shade and benches along the way. Because this is a private tour, your guide adapts the route: you can walk the whole circuit, choose the most scenic part only, or stop longer for photos. Is the Southern Great Wall worth visiting? For travellers who want ancient walls without the crowds of the northern sites, absolutely.

Ziyang Old Street

At the foot of the wall lies Ziyang Old Street, a long historic lane whose layout goes back to the Song dynasty. It is lined with restored two-storey wooden shopfronts from the Ming and Qing periods, old pharmacies, craft shops and stalls selling Linhai specialities such as rice cakes, sweet pastries and dried seafood. The street gives a real feel of a traditional southern Chinese market town.

Plan about one to two hours here. Your guide explains the old shop signs and courtyard houses, and helps you choose snacks and local gifts. The street is busiest at weekends and during festivals, when it is hung with red lanterns; on weekdays it is calmer and better for photographs.

Linhai Old Town and East Lake

Linhai is a small historic city in Taizhou prefecture, far less visited by foreign travellers than Hangzhou or Suzhou. Beside the old town lies East Lake, a park built around a lake that was originally dug centuries ago for military training, now surrounded by willows, pavilions and arched bridges. It is a peaceful place to rest after the wall.

If you have visited Linhai before, or prefer a gentler day, talk to your guide on the train: East Lake, other parks and temples in the old town can replace part of the walk. Because the day is private, the order and pace are decided around your party, within the train times.

The Bullet-Train Journey and How to Get to Linhai

How to get to the Southern Great Wall from Shanghai? The fastest way is the high-speed train from Shanghai to Linhai, which takes about three hours each way through the rice fields, rivers and hills of Zhejiang. Your guide collects you at your hotel, takes care of the tickets and boarding, and uses the journey to explain the day and adjust the plan to your interests.

The best time to visit the Southern Great Wall is spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, when the air is clear and walking is pleasant. Summers are hot and humid, so start early and bring water. If you prefer to travel door to door, a second private option replaces the train with an air-conditioned vehicle and driver.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private tour?

It is fully private. Only your party travels with your own English-speaking guide, both on the train and in Linhai; there are no other guests.

Can we change the itinerary or the pace?

Yes. You can walk all of the wall or only the best section, spend longer on Ziyang Old Street, or add East Lake. The only fixed points are the train times.

How many people can join?

The tour is for your own party, from a single traveller to a family or group of friends. For larger groups the private car option, which takes you door to door, is often more convenient; ask us for the right vehicle size.

Is the price per person or per group?

Train tickets and entrance are per person, so the total depends on the size of your party. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option for your group.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes, pickup and drop-off at hotels in central Shanghai are included. Hotels in outlying districts meet the guide at an agreed point in the city centre.

What should I bring?

Original passports, comfortable shoes, water, sun protection, a light jacket and a charged phone. Send passport copies in advance for the train booking.

When is the best time to go?
