Full Description
Shanghai Wild Animal Park
Opened in 1995 in the Pudong New Area, Shanghai Wild Animal Park was the first national-level wild animal park in China. It covers a huge area of grassland, woods and lakes in the south-east of the city, and is home to a wide range of species from Asia, Africa, the Americas and Australia, including several rare and endangered animals that are part of breeding and conservation programmes.
The park is divided into two main parts: the drive-through safari area, crossed by bus, and the walking zones, where paths lead past enclosures, lakes and show arenas. Is Shanghai Wild Animal Park worth visiting? For families, absolutely: children can see big cats and pandas in a single day, and the open setting feels very different from a city zoo.
The Safari Bus Ride
The highlight of the visit is the safari area, where large animals live in wide open enclosures and visitors stay inside a protected bus. As the bus moves slowly through the different sections, you may see lions resting in the grass, tigers, black bears, wolves, zebras, antelopes and ostriches, often just a few metres from the windows.
Rides leave regularly from the safari station inside the park and last around 30 to 40 minutes. Sit by a window on the side with the best light for photos, keep windows closed and follow the staff's instructions. Morning rides are often the most rewarding, as many animals are more active before the midday heat.
Walking Zones: Giant Pandas, Giraffes and White Tigers
After the safari, the walking zones let you explore at your own pace. The giant panda house is a must: watch the pandas eating bamboo, climbing and resting, usually most active in the morning. Nearby you can see giraffes, elephants, white tigers, golden monkeys, kangaroos, flamingos and many species of birds.
Animal shows take place at set times in the show arenas, so check the timetable at the entrance and plan your route around it. Allow at least four to five hours to see the main areas without rushing. There are restaurants, snack kiosks and rest areas throughout the park; bring water on hot days and follow the park rules by not feeding the animals.
How to Get There and When to Go
How to get to Shanghai Wild Animal Park: take Metro Line 16 to Wild Animal Park Station, then a short shuttle or taxi ride to the entrance. From People's Square the journey takes about one hour to one hour and a quarter; by taxi or private car from the city centre it is about 45 minutes to one hour, depending on traffic.
The park usually opens around 8:00 and closes in the late afternoon, a little earlier in winter, so start early to make the most of your day. The best time to visit Shanghai Wild Animal Park is spring and autumn, when the weather is mild and the animals are active; summer days are hot and humid, and weekends and school holidays are busiest.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
It is an admission ticket, not a guided tour. You visit the park independently with other visitors. If you would like a private car or guide for the day, our team can arrange it.
Is the ticket dated or timed? Do I need my passport?
The ticket is for a specific date and valid for the whole day. Chinese attractions require passport details for booking, so send your name and passport number and bring the passport with you.
What are the Shanghai Wild Animal Park opening hours?
The park usually opens around 8:00 and closes in the late afternoon, slightly earlier in winter. Show and safari times are posted at the entrance.
How long should I spend in the park?
Plan at least four to five hours; many families stay most of the day.
Is hotel pickup included?
No, this is an entry ticket only. The park is reached by Metro Line 16 or taxi, and we can arrange a private transfer on request.
What is included?
Park admission, the safari bus ride through the drive-through area, the animal shows and access to the walking zones with giant pandas, giraffes and white tigers.
Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person. Young children under 6 or below 1.3 m enter at no charge with an adult, and a youth ticket exists for ages 7 to 18 with a student ID. The booking panel on this page shows the current prices.
Is it suitable for children and people with reduced mobility?
It is ideal for children. The park is large with long distances and slopes, and the safari buses are not adapted, so it is not suitable for wheelchair users; it is also not recommended for pregnant women or people with animal allergies.
What should I bring?
Your passport, comfortable shoes, water, sun protection, a hat and a camera with a zoom lens if you have one.
When is the best time to visit?
Arrive at opening time, when the animals are most active. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons; weekdays are quieter than weekends and holidays.
Is there halal food at the park?
Food choices inside the park are limited, so Muslim travellers may prefer to bring snacks. Shanghai itself has many halal (qingzhen) restaurants, often run by Hui Muslim families, for lunch or dinner in the city.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your date in the booking panel on this page and send your passport details. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends your entry QR code.
