Ask as many questions as you like and stop for photos whenever you wish. Choose a morning start at 8:30 or an afternoon start at 13:30, and meet your guide at the entrance. Full Description

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Founded in 1987 on a hillside in the northern suburbs of Chengdu, the panda base started as a rescue centre for a handful of wild pandas and became the leading panda breeding and research centre in the world. Its success in breeding and raising cubs played a major part in the giant panda being moved from endangered to vulnerable, and pandas born here now live in reserves and zoos in China and abroad.

Today the base is a vast park of bamboo forest, lakes and enclosures spread over a large hill, recently extended with open landscapes and new panda areas. Is Chengdu Panda Base worth visiting? It is the top sight in Chengdu, and with a private guide you see far more of it in three hours than most visitors manage in a whole day.

What your private guide adds

On a private Chengdu panda base tour your guide plans the route around where the pandas are active, which changes with the weather, feeding times and the season. You avoid long detours on the hilly paths, reach the busiest enclosures ahead of tour groups and spend your time watching pandas rather than reading maps.

Along the way the guide explains how pandas digest bamboo, why they spend so much of the day eating, how cubs are raised in the nursery, how keepers prepare young pandas for life in the wild and how the base works with reserves in the mountains of Sichuan. Children's questions are always welcome, and the pace follows your family, with stops at benches, cafés and photo spots whenever you like.

Cubs, young pandas and red pandas

Cubs are mostly born between July and September, and from autumn through winter the nursery houses show the youngest of them sleeping in baskets or taking their first clumsy steps under the care of the keepers. In the outdoor enclosures, young pandas climb trees, roll on the grass and play-fight, while the adults sit upright among piles of fresh bamboo.

Your guide also takes you to the red panda areas, where these small reddish animals with ringed tails walk along branches and wooden walkways inside open woodland, often close to the path. Black swans glide on the lakes in between, and the bamboo-lined paths make the visit feel like a walk in a mountain park.

How to get there, opening hours and best time to visit

How to get to Chengdu Panda Base: take metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue station and a short bus or taxi ride to the gate, or take a taxi from the centre in about thirty to forty minutes. Transport is not included, so allow time for morning traffic. The Chengdu Panda Base opening hours are 7:30 to 18:00 from May to October and 8:00 to 17:30 from November to April.

The best time to visit Chengdu Panda Base is the morning slot, especially in summer, when pandas move indoors as it gets hot. In cool months, from autumn to spring, pandas are often active in the afternoon too, so the 13:30 start is a good choice. Some museums inside close on Mondays, while the panda areas stay open.
