Full Description

Tongli water town: canals, bridges and Ming and Qing streets

Tongli lies in Wujiang District of Suzhou, about an hour and a half by road from central Shanghai, on a cluster of small islands ringed by lakes and joined by old stone bridges. Settled more than a thousand years ago, it grew rich on rice, silk and trade in the Ming and Qing dynasties, and its merchants built whitewashed houses with black tiled roofs, carved gateways and halls that still line the canals today.

Compared with busier water towns, Tongli feels more lived-in: locals wash vegetables on the stone steps, old men play cards under the eaves and small workshops sell embroidery, wooden toys and local snacks. Your guide leads you through the lanes, explains how families lived and traded along the water, and finds the best corners for photos. A private Tongli day trip from Shanghai gives you time here without the rush of a group schedule.

Tuisi Garden: the garden of retreat and reflection

Tuisi Garden, whose name means retreat and reflection, was built in the 1880s by a retired official who wanted a quiet place to think about his years in office. Its halls, corridors and pavilions are set so low along the edge of the pond that the whole garden seems to rest on the surface of the water, a design that has earned it a place among the UNESCO-listed Classical Gardens of Suzhou.

The garden is laid out from west to east: a residence, then a courtyard garden, then the main water garden with a boat-shaped pavilion, a covered bridge and rockeries planted with old trees. It is small enough to see in about 40 minutes, yet every window frames a new picture. Visit early in the day, when the light is soft and the reflections are clearest.

A private boat ride on Tongli's canals and the Three Bridges

After the garden you board a private wooden boat, rowed by a local boatman, for a gentle ride along Tongli's canals. You pass under arched bridges, beside waterside teahouses and old merchant homes, and often see herons and egrets on the banks. The ride lasts around 20 to 30 minutes and is one of the most relaxing moments of the day, ideal for children and older travellers.

Near the centre stand the Three Bridges, three small stone bridges built close together over the meeting of the canals. By local custom, couples and families walk across all three on wedding days and birthdays for luck, peace and a long life, and your guide can show you the traditional route. Lunch follows in Tongli; it is not included, and your guide suggests places that suit your tastes.

The Humble Administrator's Garden or another Suzhou garden

In the afternoon you drive about 30 minutes to Suzhou, a city of canals more than 2,500 years old, famous for its classical gardens. Our default choice is the Humble Administrator's Garden, the largest garden in the city, with lotus ponds, island pavilions, a covered bridge, a bonsai garden and carefully framed views of a distant pagoda. Your guide explains how scholars used rocks, water and plants to recreate mountains and rivers in miniature.

If you prefer a smaller, more intimate garden, you can ask instead for the Master of the Nets Garden, a jewel of courtyards and moon gates, or the Lingering Garden with its long corridors and towering rocks; entry to one garden is included. Plan about an hour and a half in the garden. If you are wondering whether Suzhou is worth visiting from Shanghai, its gardens alone make the journey worthwhile.

Shantang Street: Suzhou's canal-side old street

The day ends on Shantang Street, a canal street dug in the 9th century to link the old city gates with Tiger Hill. Its restored eastern section is lined with wooden shopfronts, red lanterns, small museums and stone bridges, and in the evening the lights reflect on the water as boats pass by. Many young Chinese visitors stroll here in traditional costumes, which makes for colourful photos.

You walk the street at your own pace with your guide, cross its arched bridges, browse silk, fans and local sweets, and watch the canal life before the drive back to Shanghai, about one and a half to two hours depending on traffic. The best time to visit Shantang Street is late afternoon, when the lanterns come on and the heat of the day has faded.
