Full Description

Private Mutianyu Great Wall visit

Mutianyu lies about 70 kilometres northeast of the city centre in Huairou District, a little further than the busiest section of the wall but much calmer. The present wall was rebuilt under the Ming dynasty on older foundations, and its granite and brick walkway runs along a ridge lined with chestnut and pine forests, with watchtowers at short intervals and crenellations on both sides.

On a private Mutianyu tour you are not tied to a group schedule. Your guide helps you choose the best stretch for your energy and the weather, explains how soldiers lived in the towers and how smoke and fire signals carried warnings across the mountains, and waits while you take your photos. Most visitors spend about two to two and a half hours here.

Getting up and around the wall at Mutianyu

The entrance ticket and the shuttle bus from the visitor centre to the foot of the wall are included. From there you can climb the stone stairs, or buy a ride on the cable car or the chairlift; the toboggan, a winding metal slide through the trees, is a favourite way down for children and adults alike. Rides are paid on site so you can decide on the day.

The restored walkway has handrails on the steepest parts, but there are many steps, some very high. The towers in the middle give easy, rewarding views, while the upper towers repay the climb with wide panoramas of the wall snaking over the hills. In autumn the slopes turn red and gold, and in spring blossom covers the valley.

The Forbidden City with a private guide

Back in the city, your guide leads you into the Forbidden City, completed in 1420 and home to the Ming and Qing courts until the early twentieth century. Behind its moat and high red walls lie great courtyards, marble terraces and halls with golden roofs, together forming the largest ancient palace complex in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

With a private guide the visit becomes a story rather than a march through courtyards: you learn why the roofs carry rows of small guardian figures, why yellow was the imperial colour, and how court life worked. Tickets are limited and sold in real name, so we book them with your passport details. The Forbidden City is closed on most Mondays.

Inside the palace: halls, inner court and gardens

Entering by the Meridian Gate, you cross the Golden Water Bridges to the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the grandest wooden hall in China, where great ceremonies took place. The route continues past the Hall of Central Harmony and the Hall of Preserving Harmony into the inner court, with the Palace of Heavenly Purity and the residential palaces of the imperial family.

The visit ends in the Imperial Garden, a peaceful space of ancient cypresses, rockeries and pavilions by the northern Gate of Divine Prowess. Plan about two to two and a half hours inside. Special galleries such as the Treasure Gallery need extra tickets on site. The Forbidden City opening hours are usually 08:30 to 17:00 from April to October and to 16:30 in winter.

Tiananmen Square

Tiananmen Square, south of the palace, is the ceremonial heart of modern Beijing. Around its vast paved space stand the Gate of Heavenly Peace, the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum of China and the Monument to the People's Heroes, which your guide introduces as you stand among them.

Entry to the square requires a passport check and security screening, and queues can be long on holidays; the square can also close at short notice. Because this is a private tour, your guide adapts the order and timing to the queues of the day. From here our driver takes you back to your hotel at a relaxed pace.
