Full Description

Jinshanling Great Wall at sunset

Jinshanling sits on a high ridge in Luanping County, Hebei, about two hours' drive northeast of Beijing. The section was rebuilt in brick and stone in the late Ming dynasty, and it is known for watchtowers in many shapes and for long views where the wall disappears over one peak after another. Late in the day the day-trippers have gone, and the ridge becomes quiet.

As the sun drops, the light turns the brick walls amber and pink and the mountains fade into layers of blue, which makes this the favourite time for photographers. A Jinshanling sunset hike combines exercise, space and that light in one outing. Is Jinshanling worth visiting at sunset rather than in the morning? If you love photography and calm, many hikers think it is the best way to experience the Great Wall.

The route: from the east gate to the middle gate

The hike starts at the east gate, where you climb up to the wall and then walk westwards along the ridge. The total distance is about 6 to 7 kilometres and takes 3 to 4 hours, including photo stops. Every watchtower carries a sign with its name in English, so you can follow your progress easily and agree a timing plan with your driver before you set off.

The walkway mixes restored stretches with steep stairs and sections where the old stones are rough and uneven. Some climbs are short but very steep, so take your time and use your hands where needed. After the sunset you leave the wall at the middle gate, where the driver meets you for the return journey.

What you see along the wall

Jinshanling is rich in defensive details. Look for the brick barrier walls built across the walkway with small openings for archers, the towers with two or three levels where soldiers slept and stored weapons, and decorated brickwork around doorways and windows. Some towers are well preserved; others have lost their roofs and stand open to the sky.

Between the towers the views open out over folded mountains, valleys and small villages, and on clear days you can trace the line of the wall far to the east and west. In spring wild apricot blossom dots the hillsides, summer is lush and green, autumn turns the slopes red and orange, and winter brings crisp air and sometimes a dusting of snow.

Getting there: the drive from Dongzhimen

How to get to Jinshanling without a car is the main challenge for independent travellers, which is why this trip includes a return transfer. You meet the vehicle at Dongzhimen metro station in central Beijing, served by metro Lines 2 and 13 and the Airport Express, and the drive takes about two hours through the countryside of Miyun.

Your English-speaking driver acts as a guide for the journey: he explains the route, the timing and the exit point, and is waiting for you at the end, but he does not hike with you. A Jinshanling day trip from Beijing like this one gets you back to the city at around 20:00 to 22:00, depending on the season and sunset time.

Best time to go and staying safe

The best time to visit Jinshanling for sunset is from April to early November, when evenings are long and mild and the views are often clear; October is especially beautiful with autumn colours. In winter the sun sets early and temperatures on the ridge fall well below freezing, so dress warmly if you go then.

Because you finish the hike around dusk, carry a headlamp or phone torch, plenty of water and some snacks; there are few shops on the wall. Keep an eye on the time so that you reach the middle gate as agreed. Dinner is not included; halal (qingzhen) restaurants run by Hui Muslim families are easy to find in central Beijing when you return.
