Full Description
The drive from Beijing to Mutianyu
Mutianyu lies in the Huairou district, about seventy kilometres north-east of central Beijing, and the drive takes roughly ninety minutes each way. Many travellers ask how to get to Mutianyu from Beijing without a tour group, and a private car is the simplest answer: no bus changes, no waiting and a driver who knows the roads.
Your driver collects you at the hotel at the start time you choose, from as early as six in the morning. The road leaves the city, crosses the plain and climbs into green hills, and the journey is a comfortable chance to rest, watch the countryside and ask your driver about Beijing and the Wall.
The Mutianyu Great Wall
The Mutianyu section dates from the Ming dynasty and was rebuilt in the sixteenth century on earlier foundations. Its brick walls wind along forested ridges with a dense series of watchtowers, and it was among the first sections to be restored for visitors. For many people it is the best Great Wall section near Beijing, because it is scenic, well kept and less crowded than Badaling.
You enter at the visitor centre at the foot of the hill, where your driver helps with the entrance ticket. Is Mutianyu worth visiting? The views along the ridge, with the Wall rising and falling in both directions, are what most guests remember from their trip to China.
Shuttle bus, cable car and toboggan
A shuttle bus carries you from the visitor centre to the cable car station and is included in this option. From there you can walk up the steps to the Wall, or take the cable car or chairlift for a faster ascent. These rides and the famous toboggan run down are not included, so you pay for them on the day if you wish.
The walk up is steep but rewarding, and the cable car is a good choice if you want more time on the ridge or are travelling with older relatives. The toboggan is a light-hearted way down that children in particular enjoy, though queues can form in busy periods.
Hiking along the ridge
Once on the Wall, you walk at your own pace between towers, with steps that are sometimes steep and uneven. The stretch around the central towers is the busiest, while walking further along gives quieter views and better photographs. Allow around three hours on the Wall, which is the time built into this tour.
The best time to visit Mutianyu is early on a weekday in spring or autumn, when the air is clear and the hills are green or golden. Summer afternoons can be hot, and winter brings cold winds and sometimes snow that makes the Wall look very different. Wear shoes with good grip, and bring water. Take your time on the steps.
A private day out at your own pace
The advantage of a private trip is freedom. You choose the start time, set the schedule and decide how long to spend on the Wall without a group departure time. Because there is no guide, the day suits travellers who prefer to explore independently, and the driver is on hand for transport and practical questions.
If you want a guide to explain the history, our team can suggest the guided Great Wall options on other pages. Other start points for this driver-only trip, such as Beijing Capital Airport or the railway station, are available as private options in the booking panel. Tell us the start point you prefer when you book.
