The default option visits the restored Mutianyu section with VIP access that avoids the shuttle bus queue, entrance tickets and a ride up by cable car or chairlift with a toboggan back down. Your guide walks with you onto the Wall, tells the story of the dynasties that built it and then leaves you free time to explore and photograph at your own pace. Full Description
Mutianyu, the restored Great Wall
Mutianyu is a section of the Ming-dynasty Great Wall in the hills of Huairou, about seventy kilometres from central Beijing. Its brick ramparts, set along wooded ridges, are lined with closely spaced watchtowers, and long stretches have been carefully restored. It is popular with travellers who want a beautiful Great Wall tour from Beijing without the crowds of the most famous section.
On this tour your guide leads you up to the Wall and explains the military purpose of the towers, the beacon signals and the daily life of the garrison. Then you are free to walk the ridge alone, which is the best part for many guests. Is Mutianyu worth visiting? Almost everyone who goes says yes.
Badaling, the best-known section
Badaling is the section of the Great Wall that most visitors have heard of, about seventy kilometres north-west of Beijing. Its walls are broad, well restored and close to the city, so it has welcomed visitors for decades, and the Juyong Pass nearby shows how the Wall guarded the approach to the capital.
The private Badaling option includes an exclusive shuttle, a dedicated cable car entrance that avoids the long queues and a guide who explains the history. If you are wondering whether to choose Badaling or Mutianyu, Badaling is easier to reach and has the bigger name, while Mutianyu is quieter and more scenic. The private format makes the longer drive easy.
A quiet unrestored stretch
For travellers who want the wild Great Wall, there is a private option on a lesser-known unrestored section. Here the stone and brick are weathered, the path is rough and trees grow along the ramparts, which gives the Wall a very different feeling from the restored areas.
There is no cable car and few visitors, so the hike is a real walk with your guide. Comfortable shoes with strong grip are essential, and the reward is a quiet, authentic experience with long views and almost no crowds. The best time to visit is dry weather in spring or autumn, when the paths are safe. Ask us first if you are unsure about the level of difficulty.
Cable car, chairlift and toboggan
On the Mutianyu option you can ride the cable car or take the chairlift up to the Wall, and slide back down by toboggan, a long metal track through the trees that is a favourite with children and adults alike. The return ticket you choose is included, so there is nothing extra to buy.
Queues for the cable car and toboggan can still form in busy seasons, but the VIP fast access removes the shuttle bus queue at the start. Your guide will advise on the best time to ride, and the private car keeps the rest of the day relaxed. On Badaling, a return cable car ride is included.
A private day from your Beijing hotel
The tour starts at your hotel, with a car stocked for the journey, and the drive to the Wall takes roughly ninety minutes. Because the trip is private, you choose between the available start times and decide how long to spend on the Wall. The car is air-conditioned and the water is cold.
Your guide handles tickets, queues and logistics so that you can concentrate on the views. If you are travelling by train or have a long layover, ask our team about the railway station or airport options in the booking panel. Wear comfortable shoes and bring your passport for the tickets. The day ends with a calm drive back to the city.
