Full Description

Mutianyu Great Wall: the classic Great Wall day trip from Beijing

The Mutianyu section lies in Huairou District, about 70 kilometres northeast of central Beijing. A wall first rose here in the sixth century, and the stretch you see today was rebuilt in stone and brick during the Ming dynasty in the 1560s. It runs along a green ridge for about two kilometres of restored wall, with closely spaced watchtowers and crenellations on both sides, a rare feature that makes it look especially grand.

Mutianyu is the most popular choice for a Great Wall day trip from Beijing because it combines easy access with real mountain scenery and far fewer crowds than the nearest sections. The views change through the year: fresh green in spring, deep forest in summer, red and gold leaves in autumn, and sometimes snow in winter. On this tour you have about two hours on the wall.

Cable car, chairlift and toboggan at Mutianyu

From the visitor centre a shuttle bus takes you to the base of the mountain. From there you can climb the steps on foot, or ride up by cable car or chairlift; the toboggan is a popular way back down, sliding along a metal track through the trees. These rides are not included in the default option and can be bought on site, so you choose what suits your group.

Once on the wall, walk between the towers at your own pace. The stretch between the higher towers is steep, with long staircases and handrails, while the middle part is gentler and ideal for photos of the wall snaking over the hills. Wear good shoes, carry water, and leave enough time to return to the meeting point agreed with your guide.

The Forbidden City: Beijing's imperial palace

The Forbidden City, now the Palace Museum, was completed in 1420 and served as the seat of the Ming and Qing courts for nearly five centuries. Its red walls, yellow-tiled roofs and white marble terraces form the largest surviving palace complex of wood architecture in the world, surrounded by a moat and corner towers that are among the most photographed sights in China.

Is the Forbidden City worth visiting with a guide? Very much so: without context the courtyards can feel endless, while a good guide explains the symbolism of colours, numbers and roof figures and points out where court ceremonies took place. Tickets are released in limited numbers and must be booked in real name with a passport, which is why we handle them for you in advance.

Inside the Forbidden City: halls, courtyards and the Imperial Garden

You enter through the Meridian Gate in the south and cross the Golden Water River to the Hall of Supreme Harmony, raised on three marble terraces and once used for coronations and great state ceremonies. Behind it stand the Hall of Central Harmony and the Hall of Preserving Harmony, then the inner court with the palaces where the imperial family lived.

Your two-hour guided visit follows the central axis and the most important courtyards before reaching the Imperial Garden, with its ancient cypresses, rockeries and small pavilions, near the northern Gate of Divine Prowess. Extra exhibitions such as the Treasure Gallery and the Clock Gallery need separate tickets and are not included. The Forbidden City opening hours are usually 08:30 to 17:00 in summer and to 16:30 in winter, and it is closed on most Mondays.

Tiananmen Square

Just south of the Forbidden City lies Tiananmen Square, one of the largest public squares in the world. Around it stand the Gate of Heavenly Peace, the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum of China and the Monument to the People's Heroes, all seen from the outside while your guide explains their role in modern Chinese history.

Entry to the square needs a real-name reservation and a passport check. In busy seasons the security queue can take one to two hours, and the square may close at short notice for official events; in that case your guide shows you the area from around the square instead, so the day keeps its focus on the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. From here you return to your hotel in central Beijing.
