Overview
This private Jinshanling Great Wall tour takes you to one of the most beautiful and least crowded sections of the wall, in the mountains about 2.5 hours northeast of Beijing. Our English-speaking guide and driver pick you up at your hotel within the 5th Ring Road in a private air-conditioned vehicle used only by your party. At Jinshanling you hike at your own pace along a dramatic ridge of watchtowers, half restored and half wild, with your guide beside you all the way to share stories and take your photos. After the wall, you enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before the drive back. It suits couples, families with active children, friends and photographers. Other private options combine Jinshanling with Mutianyu or with Gubei Water Town and Simatai.

Full Description
Jinshanling Great Wall: the photographer's section
The Jinshanling Great Wall lies in Luanping County, Hebei Province, about 130 kilometres northeast of central Beijing. Walls guarded this pass from early times, but the masonry you see today dates mainly from the Ming dynasty in the late 1560s and 1570s, when defences along the northern frontier were rebuilt in brick and stone with closely spaced watchtowers.
What makes Jinshanling special is its shape: the wall follows a sharp mountain crest and rises and falls like a dragon's back, with towers of many different designs. Is Jinshanling worth visiting instead of the closer sections? If you want wide views, fewer people and a more authentic feel, many travellers think so, and it is the section most loved by photographers and hikers.
Hiking Jinshanling: towers, barrier walls and wild stretches
The central part of Jinshanling has been restored, so the walkway is solid but full of steep steps, while the sections further along are left partly wild, with crumbling crenellations and grass growing between the stones. Along the way look for the barrier walls built across the walkway with small loopholes for archers, the Five-Eye Tower with its row of windows, and the Kylin Screen, a brick panel carved with a mythical beast.
With a private guide you decide how far to go: an easy hour between a few towers, or a longer hike of two to three hours along the ridge. A cable car can take you up to the wall to save the first climb; it is not included and is less convenient than at other sections. Good shoes and a reasonable level of fitness are essential.
Your private day: guide, vehicle and lunch
This is a fully private Jinshanling day trip from Beijing: the vehicle, driver and guide are only for your group, so the pace and photo stops follow your wishes. On the 2.5-hour drive your guide introduces the history of the Great Wall and the countryside of northern Beijing and Hebei, and on the wall they walk with you and take group photos.
After the hike you stop for lunch at a local restaurant near the wall, usually with home-style northern Chinese dishes. Tell us about halal, vegetarian or other dietary needs when booking; China has a long Hui Muslim heritage and halal (qingzhen) cooking can often be arranged or suggested. The day ends with drop-off at your hotel, about nine to ten hours after pickup.
Best time to visit Jinshanling and the other private options
The best time to visit Jinshanling is spring, when wild apricot blossom covers the slopes, and autumn, when the hills turn red and gold under clear skies. Summer is green but hot, and winter brings icy steps, crisp air and sometimes snow on the towers. Early morning and late afternoon give the softest light, which is why you can choose a later start time.
Other private options extend the day. One adds the restored Mutianyu section with a chairlift ride up and the toboggan down. Another adds Gubei Water Town, a rebuilt riverside town of stone lanes and canals at the foot of the Simatai Great Wall, with a return cable car to Simatai. These longer days last about 10 hours.
