Full Description
A show staged on the water of West Lake
The West Lake evening show is one of the most original performances in China: there is no theatre stage. Instead, the actors perform on a platform hidden just below the surface of a quiet bay on the northern shore of the lake, so the dancers appear to walk, run and dance on the water itself. Music, carefully designed lighting and artificial mist roll across the lake, while the dark outline of the hills and the city lights form the backdrop.
The scenes draw on the poetry and legends of West Lake: a spring night on the river, girls picking tea leaves in the hills, a classic love legend in which two lovers become butterflies, moonlight mirrored on the water and a beloved folk melody about jasmine flowers. You do not need to understand Chinese to follow it: the story is told through movement, music and light.
VIP seats and the lakeside auditorium
The audience sits in an open-air auditorium built on the shore and facing the water. With the default VIP option you sit in the central section, with a straight, unobstructed view of the dancers and the light effects; regular seats, available as another option on this page, see the same full performance from the side sections.
Seating is assigned by section, and the auditorium is designed so that every seat looks over the lake. Arrive about 30 minutes before the 19:40 start to pass the entrance checks calmly and find your seat. Photography without flash is usually tolerated, but the best memories come from simply watching. The show lasts around one hour, and the area empties quickly afterwards, so wait a few minutes before heading for a taxi.
West Lake by evening: before and after the show
Make the most of your evening by arriving early and enjoying the northern shore of West Lake at sunset. From here you look across the water to the islands and pagodas, and the long causeways glow as the lights come on. Is the West Lake evening show worth it? For many travellers it is the highlight of a Hangzhou visit, precisely because it uses the real lake rather than a theatre.
If you are visiting Hangzhou on a day trip from Shanghai, check the last train times first: the show ends after 20:30, so most visitors stay overnight. For dinner, Hangzhou has halal (qingzhen) restaurants run by Hui families, and the historic Phoenix Mosque stands near Hefang Street in the old town; ask us for suggestions close to the lake.
How to get to the show and the best time to go
How to get to the West Lake evening show: the open-air auditorium is on the northern shore of West Lake, in the West Lake District of Hangzhou, about 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or ride-hailing car from most central hotels and the lakeside area. Transport is not included, but we can arrange a private transfer from your hotel on request.
The best time to see the show is from spring to autumn, when evenings by the lake are mild. Summer nights are warm and humid, so bring mosquito repellent; in spring and autumn, a light jacket helps as the air cools over the water. The performance depends on the weather and can be cancelled in thunderstorms or heavy rain, and winter schedules may change; in that case we contact you to move your date.
