Full Description
The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon glass bridge
Opened in 2016, the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon glass bridge stretches about 430 metres between two cliffs, roughly 300 metres above the valley floor, and was built with layered panels of tempered glass that let you see straight down into the gorge. It held several world records for length and height when it opened and remains one of the most thrilling viewpoints in Hunan province.
Crossing takes ten to twenty minutes depending on how often you stop for photos. Staff hand out shoe covers to protect the glass, and large bags, tripods and sharp objects may have to go into lockers before you step on. On clear days the view stretches over forested ridges and the canyon twisting below; on misty days the bridge seems to float in the clouds, which many visitors find even more magical. Is the glass bridge worth visiting? For the view alone, absolutely.
Into the canyon: waterfalls, pools and cliffs
After the bridge, the route leads down into the Grand Canyon itself, a narrow, deep gorge carved by mountain streams. Stone stairways and paths follow the water past waterfalls, clear green pools, mossy walls and overhanging cliffs, and the air on the valley floor is noticeably cooler than above, a relief in the hot summer months.
The full canyon route usually takes two to three hours at a comfortable pace, including stops for photos. Most of it is downhill, but some stretches are steep and the stone can be wet and slippery, so good shoes matter. The waterfalls are at their most powerful after rain in spring and early summer. Take your time here: the quiet corners of the gorge are what make a Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon visit memorable.
Park activities: zip line, slides, elevators and Rainbow Lake
The default option covers the canyon entry and the glass bridge. If you want more adventure, another option on this page adds five activities you choose on site from a list that includes a mixed-reality ride, a sky zip line, two cliff elevators, two mountain slides and a boat ride across Rainbow Lake. A third option covers the canyon entry through the gate without the bridge, for those who prefer to keep their feet on rock.
Each activity has its own rules: the zip line is for riders weighing 30 to 90 kilograms, and the slides, elevators and boat have height or age conditions checked by the staff. Slides and elevators also save time and steps on the descent, and the lake boat is a calm way to finish the route among the cliffs. Activities can pause in storms or strong wind.
How to get to Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon and when to go
The Grand Canyon lies in Cili County, east of the Wulingyuan area: allow roughly 40 minutes by road from Wulingyuan and about an hour from Zhangjiajie city or Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG). Transport is not included in the ticket, but we can arrange a private transfer with an air-conditioned vehicle, or a full private day that pairs the canyon with nearby sights.
Entry slots in the booking panel run from 08:00 to 15:00, and the scenic area closes in the late afternoon, so the earlier the better. The best time to visit the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon is from April to June and September to October, when the weather is mild and the waterfalls are full. Weekdays are calmer than Chinese public holidays. On days of heavy rain or maintenance, the bridge can close temporarily.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
It is an entry ticket, not a guided tour: you visit on your own, at your own pace, together with other visitors. If you would like a private guide or driver for the day, ask us and we will arrange it.
Is the ticket dated or timed? Do I need my passport?
Yes. The ticket is for the date and entry slot you choose, between 08:00 and 15:00. Chinese scenic areas use real-name booking, so you must bring the original passport used for the reservation: it is scanned at the gate instead of a paper ticket.
Is the price per person or per group?
The ticket is priced per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option for your date.
What is the difference between the options?
The default option includes the canyon entry and the glass bridge. Another option adds five activities of your choice on site, and a third covers the canyon entry without the bridge.
Is hotel pickup included?
No. Transport is not included, but we can arrange a private air-conditioned transfer from Wulingyuan or Zhangjiajie city.
What is included?
Entry to the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon scenic area, the walk across the glass bridge, and a self-guided visit with quick passport entry. A guide, transport, insurance, food and drinks are not included.
How long does the visit take?
Plan three to five hours for the bridge and the canyon route; add one to two hours if you choose the activity option.
Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?
It is not suitable for children under 14. The bridge itself is flat, but the canyon route has many steep, sometimes slippery stairs, so it is difficult for travellers with reduced mobility.
Is the glass bridge safe?
Yes. It is built of layered tempered glass, visitor numbers are controlled and staff supervise the crossing. It closes in bad weather as a precaution.
What should I bring?
Your passport, flat non-slip shoes, water, a rain jacket or umbrella, sun protection in summer and a small bag that you can keep with you.
What is the best time to visit?
Come in the morning for fewer crowds. April to June and September to October bring mild weather and full waterfalls; avoid Chinese public holidays if you can.
