Full Description

Zhangjiajie in one day: how the route works

Most travellers spend two or three days in Zhangjiajie, because the Forest Park, the Grand Canyon and Tianmen Mountain lie in different directions. The National Forest Park sits at Wulingyuan, the Grand Canyon about 40 minutes away in Cili County, and Tianmen Mountain more than an hour south beside Zhangjiajie city. Seeing all three in a single day only works with an early start and precise timing.

That is exactly what this private Zhangjiajie day trip is built for. Our guide plans the order around queues, transfer times and the last entry at Tianmen Mountain, and adjusts it for the weather when mist hides the peaks. The pace is brisk but not rushed, and because the van is yours, you rest between sights rather than wait for others.

Bailong Elevator and Yuanjiajie

The day starts at around 07:00 at the Bailong Elevator, a lift built against a cliff that climbs about 326 metres in under two minutes to the Yuanjiajie plateau of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, part of the UNESCO-listed Wulingyuan Scenic Area. Going up first thing means short queues and soft morning light between the pillars.

Over about two hours, our guide takes you to the main viewpoints over the floating-mountain pillars, including the Pillar of the Southern Sky, and across the First Bridge Under Heaven, a natural arch between two peaks. The aim is to finish here by about 11:00, so the guide follows the shortest path between the best views.

Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge

A 40-minute drive brings you to the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon. The Glass Bridge, opened in 2016, crosses about 430 metres from rim to rim and hangs roughly 300 metres above the canyon floor, with a deck of layered glass panels. Walking across it, with the forest far below your feet, is one of the most memorable moments in China.

Plan on one to two hours here for the crossing and photos. Optional extras at the canyon, such as the zip line, the slides or the bungee jump, depend on time and queues and are paid on site. Lunch is taken around the canyon at your own expense, and the van leaves by about 14:00 for Tianmen Mountain.

Tianmen Mountain cable car and the 99-bend road

A drive of about 80 minutes takes you to Tianmen Mountain, whose last entry is usually around 16:00. From the cable car or shuttle you look over deep valleys and Heaven-Linking Avenue, a road of 99 hairpin bends that zigzags up the slope. During 2026 the long city cable car has been partly closed for upgrades, so our guide uses the route that is open on the day.

How do you get to Tianmen Mountain from the Forest Park? By road it is well over an hour, which is why a private van with a driver who knows the timings makes such a difference on a one-day trip: no time is lost looking for transport or queuing for taxis, and you can doze between sights.

Tianmen Cave and a sunset finale

Tianmen Cave, Heaven's Gate, is a natural arch about 131 metres high and 57 metres wide set into the mountain. Reach it by escalator, or climb the 999 steps if you have energy left. Standing inside, the opening frames drifting clouds, blue sky and layered ridges like a giant picture window.

Weather permitting, the visit ends with a sunset view from the mountain, a fitting close to the day. Allow about two and a half hours at Tianmen, including time on the summit cliff paths if the light holds. If you are leaving Zhangjiajie that night, our driver can take you straight to Zhangjiajie West Railway Station or Zhangjiajie Airport (DYG), arriving at around 20:00.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private tour?

It is private: the guide, the driver and the van are only for your party.

Can we change the itinerary or the pace?

You can adjust the time at each stop within the day, but Tianmen Mountain has a fixed last entry in the afternoon, so our guide keeps the overall timing on track. If you prefer a slower day, consider our 2-day tours.

How many people fit in the van?

We use a private air-conditioned van with seven, nine or twelve seats, chosen for the size of your party.

Is the price per person or per group?

The price is per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price; entry tickets are paid separately on site.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes, private hotel pickup and drop-off are included, with an optional evening drop-off at the railway station or airport.

What is included?

An English-speaking guide, private hotel transfers in an air-conditioned van, the optional evening drop-off at Zhangjiajie West Railway Station or Zhangjiajie Airport (DYG), and a timed route to reach every site before the Tianmen last entry. Entry tickets and meals are not included.

How long is the tour?

About ten hours of sightseeing, from an early-morning pickup to around 20:00.

Is it suitable for children or reduced mobility?

Active children usually manage well, as elevators, cable cars and escalators do much of the climbing, but it is a long day. It is not suitable for wheelchair users.

What should I bring?

Your passports, comfortable shoes, a light jacket, water, snacks, a power bank and some cash.

When is the best time to do this trip?

Spring and autumn are ideal. The trip is not offered during the Chinese New Year week, early May and early October, when crowds make the timing impossible.

Why are the entry tickets not included?

Ticket prices vary by age and discounts for seniors and children apply, so they are bought on the day with your passports. Our guide takes care of it so you do not queue.

How do I book and confirm?

Choose your date and pickup time in the booking panel at least three days ahead and send your passport details. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes.
