Full Description

The Guadalquivir River and Triana

The Guadalquivir, whose name comes from the Arabic al-wadi al-kabir, the great river, is the only navigable river in Spain, and for two centuries after 1503 Seville held the monopoly of trade with the Americas thanks to it. Ships unloaded silver and spices along these banks, and the city grew into one of the richest in Europe. Today the river is calmer, lined with promenades, palm trees and rowing clubs.

Your Seville boat tour starts in Triana, the lively district across the river from the centre, long known for its potters, sailors and flamenco artists. The jetty sits below Calle Betis and next to the Triana Bridge, so you can explore the district’s ceramic shops and the market before or after your trip.

Triana Bridge and La Cartuja

The Isabel II Bridge, better known as the Triana Bridge, opened in 1852 and is one of the oldest iron bridges still standing in Europe. Its arches decorated with iron rings are an icon of Seville, and passing under them by boat is one of the highlights of the cruise. Before that, the boat heads north to La Cartuja Island, where a 15th-century monastery later became a ceramics factory.

La Cartuja hosted the Universal Exhibition of 1992, held to mark five centuries since the voyage to the Americas, and the captain points out the modern pavilions, bridges and towers left from that event. It is the newest part of Seville, a striking contrast with the historic centre further south.

Torre del Oro and the Maestranza Bullring

Back in the historic centre, the boat passes the Real Maestranza, one of the oldest and most beautiful bullrings in Spain, built in the 18th century with a white and ochre baroque facade. A little further stands the Torre del Oro, the twelve-sided watchtower built in the early 13th century under the Almohads to guard the river port. A chain once ran from its base across the river to block enemy ships.

Today the Torre del Oro houses a small naval museum and is one of the most photographed landmarks of Seville. Seen from the water, with the golden light reflected on the river, it is the perfect photo stop of this Guadalquivir River cruise.

San Telmo Palace and the 1929 exhibition

South of the tower, the boat glides past the San Telmo Palace, a baroque building from the 17th century that was first a school for sailors and is now the seat of the Andalusian regional government. Its richly carved main portal faces the gardens of María Luisa Park. Further on, the river skirts the area of the 1929 Ibero-American Exhibition, which gave Seville many of its most beautiful pavilions and the grand semicircle of Plaza de España.

After this point the boat turns and returns to the jetty in Triana. Throughout the trip you enjoy cold Andalusian tapas, including cured meats and cheese, and a soft drink of your choice. The best time for this tour is spring or autumn; in summer, the shaded deck and the river breeze make it a pleasant break from the heat.
