Full Description
The Port of Los Cristianos
Los Cristianos began as a small fishing village on the south coast of Tenerife and grew into one of the island's best-loved resort towns, in the municipality of Arona. Its port is still busy with fishing boats, and it is also the island's main ferry terminal for La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma. Next to the harbour is the golden sand beach of Los Cristianos, sheltered by the brown slopes of Montaña de Guaza, and a long seafront promenade lined with cafés and ice cream shops.
Your cruise leaves from the fisherman's wharf, in the excursion area of the port. Los Cristianos is easy to reach by bus or taxi from Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas, or on foot from much of the town. Parking near the port is limited in the evening, so allow time, and enjoy a walk along the promenade before boarding.
Whales and Dolphins off Los Cristianos
The sea off Los Cristianos is the southern end of the Teno-Rasca marine protected area, which stretches along the southwest coast of Tenerife. Deep water lies only a short distance from the port, and a resident population of short-finned pilot whales feeds and rests here all year, together with bottlenose dolphins. In some seasons, Atlantic spotted dolphins, common dolphins and larger whales such as Bryde's whales also pass through.
Whale watching in Los Cristianos is ideal for a short cruise because the animals are often found soon after leaving the harbour. Late afternoon is a lovely time to watch them: the sea is often calmer, and the low sun lights up their backs and the spray when they breathe. Sightings depend on the sea and cannot be guaranteed, but if none are seen, you can reschedule another trip subject to availability.
Sunset over the Coast and Mount Teide
As the yacht turns back towards the island, the evening light paints the dry volcanic hills of the south coast in shades of orange and pink. Behind them rises Mount Teide, at 3,715 metres the highest mountain in Spain and the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage national park, its summit often clear above the clouds at this hour. To the west, the rounded silhouette of La Gomera sits on the horizon, and in some months the sun sets just beside it.
Watching the sunset from the sea is one of the most peaceful things to do in Tenerife, far from the busy promenades. The crew times the route so you are on the water for the best of the colours, with a pause for photos. The best time to book a sunset cruise is a clear day with little wind, and our team can help you pick the date.
The Eco-Yacht and the Sunset Swim
The yacht used on this cruise was built specifically for watching whales. Its propellers are protected inside the hull, so they cannot harm animals, its engines are quiet and it discharges neither smoke nor waste into the sea. The sides sit very close to the water, giving you an eye-level view of the whales and dolphins, and its compact size and low centre of gravity make it stable and comfortable even for those who worry about seasickness.
The crew follows a strict policy of responsible approach: no chasing, no surrounding the animals and a careful distance at all times. Before returning to port there is a stop for a swim and snorkel in the open Atlantic as the last rays of light fall on the water. A snorkel mask can be rented on board, and snacks and drinks are available to buy. There is a toilet on board.
