Full Description

The fast ferry from Los Cristianos to La Gomera

La Gomera lies about 40 kilometres west of Tenerife, and the fast ferry from the port of Los Cristianos reaches San Sebastián de La Gomera in about 50 minutes. The crossing is part of the adventure: from the deck you watch Mount Teide grow behind you while the cliffs of La Gomera rise ahead, and dolphins and pilot whales are sometimes seen in the channel between the islands.

Hotel pickup in south Tenerife is included, so you are taken to the port in good time without worrying about parking or tickets. A La Gomera day trip from Tenerife is one of the easiest ways to go island hopping in the Canary Islands, and it shows a completely different side of the archipelago, quieter and greener than the resorts of the south.

Roque de Agando and the island's ravines

From San Sebastián, the coach climbs into the centre of the island along roads that wind above deep ravines, terraced fields and palm groves. La Gomera is an old volcanic island that has not erupted for millions of years, so erosion has carved it into sharp ridges and steep valleys called barrancos, which give the island its dramatic shape.

The highlight of the drive is the Roque de Agando, a tall column of volcanic rock that stands like a natural monument above the forest. It is the hardened core of an ancient volcano, left behind after the softer rock around it washed away. The viewpoint next to it offers one of the most photographed views on La Gomera, with Teide often visible across the sea on clear days.

Garajonay National Park and its laurel forest

Garajonay National Park protects the finest remaining laurel forest in the Canary Islands and was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1986. This kind of humid forest covered much of southern Europe millions of years ago and now survives mainly on these Atlantic islands. Trade-wind clouds drift through the trees, leaving moisture on the leaves, and moss and lichen hang from the branches.

Walking a little way into the forest, you enter a green, quiet world with a soft light and the smell of damp earth, very different from the dry south of Tenerife. Your guide explains the plants, the role of the clouds and the legend behind the park's name. A Garajonay National Park tour is the best way to understand why La Gomera is called the green island.

Lunch and the whistled language of La Gomera

Lunch is served at a local restaurant on the island, a good chance to try La Gomera's simple country cooking. Island specialities often include almogrote, a spicy spread of aged cheese, peppers and oil, hearty vegetable and watercress stews, Canary potatoes with mojo sauces and desserts made with palm honey, a sweet syrup from the island's date palms. Drinks are not included.

During the lunch stop you see a demonstration of Silbo Gomero, the whistled language of La Gomera. Islanders developed it long ago to send messages across the deep ravines, transforming Spanish words into whistled tones that can travel several kilometres. Today it is taught in island schools and is listed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, and hearing it live is a memorable part of the trip.

San Sebastián de La Gomera

San Sebastián is the small capital of La Gomera, set around a sheltered bay with a black sand beach and a busy harbour. In the 15th century it was the last port of call for expeditions sailing west across the Atlantic to the Americas, and ships stopped here for water and supplies before the long voyage. This history gives the town a special place in the story of the age of exploration.

Before the ferry back, you have time to see the old town, with its stone tower from the 15th century in a shaded park, the church of the Assumption with its old wooden ceilings, and the colourful houses along the pedestrian main street. Benches under the trees and small cafés make it a relaxing end to the day before returning to Tenerife.
