Full Description
Puerto de Tazacorte, gateway to the west coast
Puerto de Tazacorte is the main harbour of La Palma's west coast, a small seaside town with a black-sand beach, colourful houses and fish restaurants facing the Atlantic. It sits where the Barranco de las Angustias, the deep ravine coming down from the Caldera de Taburiente, meets the sea, and the climate here is drier and sunnier than in the east of the island.
The boat leaves the harbour around midday and turns south along the coast. If you are asking how to get to Puerto de Tazacorte, it is a short drive from Los Llanos de Aridane, the largest town on the west side, and there is parking near the seafront. Coming early lets you enjoy the promenade and the view of the cliffs before boarding.
The new lava deltas of the 2021 eruption
In the autumn of 2021 the Tajogaite volcano on the Cumbre Vieja ridge sent rivers of lava down the western slopes. When the flows reached the ocean they cooled in clouds of steam and piled up into new platforms of rock, called lava deltas or fajanas, adding dozens of hectares of brand-new land to the island. They are the youngest coastline in Spain.
From the boat you see these deltas up close: dark, rough fronts of lava rising from the water, layered cliffs and the trails of the flows climbing back up towards the volcano. The guide explains how the lava met the sea, how the coast is changing and how life is already returning to the new rocks. This La Palma boat tour is one of the best ways to see the scale of the eruption.
Cumbre Vieja seen from the sea
The Cumbre Vieja is the long volcanic ridge that forms the southern half of La Palma, dotted with cones and craters from eruptions in 1949, 1971 and 2021. From the water you see its profile rise above the coast, with the dark new cone of Tajogaite standing out against older green slopes and banana plantations below.
Seeing the ridge from offshore helps you understand the whole island: how lava travelled from the summit to the sea, which villages were spared and how the landscape keeps growing. Is the Cumbre Vieja worth visiting? Combining this boat trip with a guided trek to the volcano or a visit to a lava tube gives you a complete picture of La Palma's volcanic story.
Dolphins, whales and turtles of La Palma
The waters off the west coast drop quickly to great depths, so wildlife is never far away. On the way the crew looks out for bottlenose and common dolphins, which often swim beside the boat, short-finned pilot whales that live around the Canary Islands, and loggerhead turtles resting near the surface. Seabirds such as shearwaters glide over the waves.
These are wild animals in open water, so sightings vary from day to day, but the crew knows the area well and keeps a respectful distance. The best time to visit La Palma for calm seas is from spring to autumn, although boat trips run all year. Bring sunglasses and a camera: the light on the lava and the sea is beautiful around midday.
