Full Description
Toledo Cathedral and the old town
Toledo Cathedral is the centrepiece of any Toledo tour. Work began in 1226 under King Ferdinand III and continued until 1493, and the result is a vast Gothic church that is still the seat of the Primate of Spain. Your guide explains the carved choir stalls, the golden altarpiece and the Baroque Transparente, a light-flooded sculpture cut through the ambulatory wall.
Toledo Cathedral tickets are included in this option, so you avoid the ticket queue and enter with the group. Opening hours and visiting areas change by day and season, and the cathedral can close for services, which is one reason a guided visit works well. Plan roughly an hour inside before you continue through the streets.
Santa María la Blanca synagogue
Santa María la Blanca was built in the late 12th century by Toledo's Jewish community and is the oldest synagogue building still standing in the city. Its five aisles are divided by rows of horseshoe arches resting on octagonal pillars, a Mudéjar style that blends Islamic and Christian ideas and explains why Toledo is called the City of Three Cultures.
The building became a church in the early 15th century, which is why it carries a Christian name today. The visit is short, about 20 minutes, but it is one of the most photogenic stops of the day. Your guide places it in the context of the old Jewish quarter and the peaceful coexistence and later tensions that shaped medieval Toledo.
Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes
The Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes was commissioned by Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand in 1477 to celebrate a victory and to serve as their burial place. It is a leading example of the Isabelline Gothic style, with a light-filled church and a two-storey cloister full of fine stone carving and garden views.
On the outer wall you will notice iron chains that once held Christian captives freed after the conquest of Granada. Allow about 30 minutes. If you are wondering whether Toledo is worth visiting for a day, this monastery alone, together with the cathedral, answers the question.
Church of Santo Tomé and El Greco
The small Church of Santo Tomé holds one of the most famous paintings in Spain, El Greco's Burial of the Count of Orgaz, completed in the late 1580s. El Greco settled in Toledo in the 1570s, and this dark, dramatic canvas with its heavenly upper half is the best introduction to the painter.
The church also has a fine Mudéjar bell tower that you will spot from the streets nearby. Visits are brief because the church is small, and your guide will give you the story behind the painting before you go in. After the visit you have free time to wander, shop for marzipan and eat.
