Full Description

Segovia's Roman aqueduct and old town

Segovia lies about an hour north-west of Madrid, across the Guadarrama mountains. The day trip begins beneath its Roman aqueduct, built around the late first or early second century AD. Its granite blocks are held together without any mortar, and at its highest point the double row of arches rises nearly 29 metres above Plaza del Azoguejo.

From the aqueduct, the guide leads you up through the old town to Plaza Mayor and the Cathedral of Segovia, a late Gothic church nicknamed the lady of cathedrals for its elegant pinnacles. Segovia's historic centre and aqueduct have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.

The Alcázar of Segovia

At the western tip of the old town, the Alcázar of Segovia rises on a rocky ridge between two rivers like the prow of a ship. Originally an Islamic-era fortress, it became a favourite residence of the Castilian kings. Isabella I set out from here to be proclaimed Queen of Castile in 1474.

Inside you walk through royal halls with carved wooden ceilings in Mudéjar style, a hall of kings with painted friezes, and an armoury. The views from the terraces over the Castilian plains are superb. Many people ask if the Alcázar of Segovia is worth visiting; with its turrets and setting, it is one of Spain's most photographed castles.

Toledo, the city of three cultures

In the afternoon the coach heads south to Toledo, set on a granite hill wrapped by a deep bend of the river Tagus. For centuries it was a capital of Visigothic, Islamic and Castilian kingdoms, and a place where Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities lived side by side, earning it the name city of three cultures.

On a Toledo day trip from Madrid, the guide walks you through narrow lanes past the Jewish quarter, old synagogues and the small Mosque of Cristo de la Luz, built around 999. Toledo is also famous for damascene metalwork and marzipan shops. Its old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986.

Toledo Cathedral

Toledo Cathedral, begun in 1226, is one of the masterpieces of Spanish Gothic and the seat of the Primate of Spain. With the complete option, you enter with your guide to see its soaring five-aisled nave, the richly carved choir stalls and the gilded main altarpiece.

Highlights include the Transparente, a dramatic Baroque altar lit by an opening cut in the vault, and the sacristy, a real art gallery with paintings by El Greco and Goya. Allow about an hour inside. If you choose the option without the cathedral, you will still see its great façade and bell tower from the square.
