Full Description
Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and Gran Vía
The historic routes of the Madrid bus tour circle the old centre, where Puerta del Sol marks kilometre zero of Spain's road network and the famous clock that rings in the New Year. A short walk from the stop leads to Plaza Mayor, the arcaded 17th-century square once used for markets, bullfights and royal celebrations.
From the top deck, Gran Vía is a highlight: the grand avenue opened in the early 20th century and is lined with theatres, domed buildings and flagship shops, including the landmark Metrópolis building. Hop off here for shopping, or stay aboard for the best photos of Madrid's skyline.
The Royal Palace, Almudena Cathedral and Plaza de España
West of the centre, the bus passes the Royal Palace of Madrid, the official residence of the Spanish royal family and one of the largest palaces in Europe, with more than 3,000 rooms. Opposite stands Almudena Cathedral, and between them the Plaza de Oriente gardens make a peaceful break.
Nearby, Plaza de España has been renewed with wide lawns and fountains around the Cervantes monument. If you plan a Royal Palace visit, hop off here and book a timed entry. The sunset over the Campo del Moro gardens and the palace walls is one of the loveliest sights of any Madrid city tour.
Paseo del Prado, the art museums and Retiro Park
Madrid's Golden Triangle of Art lies along Paseo del Prado: the Prado Museum, with masterpieces by Velázquez, Goya and El Greco; the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection; and the Reina Sofía, where Picasso's Guernica hangs. The bus stops beside each one, making it easy to plan a museum morning.
The boulevard and the neighbouring Retiro Park were listed together by UNESCO in 2021 as a landscape of arts and sciences. Hop off at Puerta de Alcalá to enter Retiro, row a boat on the great pond or visit the Crystal Palace. The Cibeles fountain and the palatial city hall stand at the northern end.
Modern Madrid, the Salamanca district and the Bernabéu
The modern route follows Paseo de la Castellana, the long avenue of banks, embassies and glass towers that runs north through the city. On the way you pass the Salamanca district, Madrid's most elegant area, known for designer boutiques along Calle Serrano.
Football fans should hop off at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, the ground of Real Madrid, recently rebuilt with a striking metal skin. Its stadium tour and trophy museum are among the most popular visits in the city. Riding this route is also a good way to understand how Madrid grew beyond its historic core.
