Overview

This shared snorkelling trip starts on Nusa Lembongan and takes you by boat to three of the best sites around Nusa Penida, beginning with the manta rays of Manta Point. After pickup from your hotel on Lembongan's main road, or a meeting at the Yellow Bridge for guests on Nusa Ceningan, you enjoy welcome drinks and snacks before the boat follows the high cliffs of Penida's coast. An English-speaking guide leads each stop: about 45 minutes with the mantas, then the coral gardens of Gamat Bay and the drift reef of Mangrove Point. Back on Lembongan, an Indonesian buffet lunch is served by the mangroves, followed by a tour of the mangrove forest by kayak, paddleboard or gondola boat. Other options skip lunch, the transfer, or both.

  • Indonesian buffet lunch with tea, coffee and water by the mangroves

Full Description

Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan

Nusa Lembongan is the small, relaxed island between Bali and Nusa Penida, about 30 to 40 minutes by boat from Sanur, with white beaches, clifftop viewpoints and a slow pace of life. Its neighbour Nusa Ceningan is linked to it by the bright Yellow Bridge, and the shallow channel between the two is famous for its seaweed farms, where villagers grow and dry seaweed in neat underwater plots.

Staying on Lembongan puts you right next to the best snorkelling in the Nusa islands, and this trip makes the most of it: the boat leaves from the island itself, so there is no early crossing from Bali. The group gathers at a beachfront base for welcome drinks and snacks, a gear fitting and a short briefing on manta etiquette before heading out.

Manta Point, Nusa Penida

Manta Point lies off the south-west coast of Nusa Penida, beneath sheer limestone cliffs that drop straight into the ocean. Here, plankton-rich water draws reef manta rays to feed and to visit cleaning stations, where small wrasse pick parasites from their skin. The mantas often measure 3 to 5 metres across, and they glide just below the surface while you float above.

Manta Point snorkelling is the first stop of the day, when the sea is usually calmer. The guide watches the swell constantly: if the waves are too strong to swim safely, the itinerary is adjusted and another site is chosen. Sightings are frequent but not guaranteed, and the rules are simple: keep your distance, never touch or chase the rays and let them come to you.

Gamat Bay

Gamat Bay sits on Nusa Penida's north-west coast, sheltered from the open ocean and close to the village of Toyapakeh. The reef slopes gently from bright shallow coral into deep blue, covered with table corals, sea fans and anemones with their resident clownfish. Schools of fusiliers and surgeonfish swirl overhead, and hawksbill turtles are regular visitors.

After the excitement of the mantas, Gamat Bay is a calm, colourful second stop of about 30 minutes, ideal for anyone less confident in the water. The guide points out moray eels, pufferfish and nudibranchs hiding in the reef. This is one of the most popular Nusa Penida snorkelling spots, and visibility is often excellent, especially in the dry season from April to November.

Mangrove Point

Mangrove Point is the reef along the north-east tip of Nusa Lembongan, just offshore from the mangrove forest. The current here often carries snorkellers along the reef in a gentle drift, so you can relax and glide over branching corals, giant clams and colourful reef fish without much effort, while the boat follows to pick you up at the end.

It is the third and final snorkelling stop, about 30 minutes, and a nice contrast to the deeper water at Manta Point. The guide decides the exact entry point according to the tide and current. A marine conservation fee, paid locally, supports the protected area that keeps these reefs healthy; if you already paid it on arrival in the Nusa islands, bring your ticket.

Nusa Lembongan Mangrove Forest

The mangrove forest of Nusa Lembongan covers the island's north-east shore, a protected maze of shallow, clear channels lined with trees whose roots arch out of the water. It is a nursery for young reef fish, crabs and shrimp, and herons and kingfishers hunt along the banks. The forest also shields the island's coast from storms and erosion.

After the snorkelling, an Indonesian buffet lunch with tea, coffee and water is served by the mangroves. The Nusa Lembongan mangrove tour follows, by kayak, stand-up paddleboard or traditional gondola boat depending on availability, gliding quietly between the trees for around 30 minutes. It is a peaceful end to the day before the transfer back to your hotel.
