Full Description

Sanur harbour and Sanur beach

Sanur, on the south-east coast of Bali, is the island's oldest beach resort, known for its calm, reef-protected sea, long beachfront path and sunrise views; the harbour sits at Jalan Matahari Terbit, whose name means rising sun. It is the main departure point for fast boats to Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Ceningan, with a harbour terminal, ticket counters and a pier where passengers board.

If you are asking how to get to Sanur harbour, it is about 30 to 45 minutes by car from Kuta or Seminyak and about an hour from Ubud, depending on traffic. Taxis and ride-hailing cars drop off at the terminal entrance. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your departure to check in and find your boat, especially for the busy early-morning sailings.

Crossing the Badung Strait

The fast boat heads south-east across the Badung Strait, the channel that separates mainland Bali from the Nusa islands. The crossing takes about 30 minutes. On the way you pass close to Nusa Lembongan and its small neighbour Nusa Ceningan, with their mangroves, seaweed farms and white beaches, while the cliffs of Nusa Penida grow larger ahead and Mount Agung rises behind you on clear days.

The strait has strong currents and the sea can be bumpy, especially in the afternoon and during the windy months. Sit near the back of the boat if you are sensitive to motion, and keep your bag on your lap or under your seat. The harbour staff help passengers on and off the boat and with luggage.

Nusa Penida island

Nusa Penida is the largest of the Nusa islands, a rugged limestone plateau with dramatic sea cliffs, hidden coves and some of the most photographed coastline in Indonesia. On the west coast you find Kelingking Beach with its dinosaur-shaped headland, the circular cove of Broken Beach, the natural rock pool of Angel's Billabong and the sheltered snorkelling bay of Crystal Bay. On the east coast, Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach are reached by stairways cut into white cliffs.

The waters around the island are famous for manta rays and, in season, ocean sunfish. Roads on Nusa Penida are narrow and bumpy, and distances between sights are longer than they look, so the most comfortable way to explore is with a private car and local driver, which we offer separately. The best time to visit Nusa Penida is the dry season from April to October, when the sea is calmer.

Planning a Nusa Penida day trip from Bali

For a Nusa Penida day trip from Bali, take one of the morning boats between 07:30 and 09:00, meet your driver at the harbour and spend the day on one or both coasts. The afternoon departures from Toyapakeh back to Sanur run between 12:30 and 17:00, and you can book that direction as a separate one-way ticket on this page.

The 15:00 departure from Sanur suits travellers who plan to stay a night or more on the island, arriving in time for sunset. Whatever your plan, bring your passport, as this ticket is for non-Indonesian passport holders, and keep some cash for the small local levy that may be collected from visitors on arrival.
