Full Description
Mount Aso and the Nakadake crater
Mount Aso rises in the centre of Kyushu and is among the largest volcanic calderas in the world, a vast bowl roughly 25 kilometres from north to south that holds towns, rice fields and railways. Inside it stand the Five Peaks of Aso, and Nakadake is the active one, a crater that still breathes steam and sulphur. On a clear day a Mount Aso tour from Fukuoka shows you the raw scale of this landscape, with ash slopes, pastures and distant peaks in every direction.
Access to the crater rim depends on volcanic gas levels and current traffic restrictions. At present the crater area is viewed from a distance, and your guide decides the timing on the day. Expect about thirty minutes here for photos and the views. If standing right on the crater edge is your main goal, keep in mind that it may not be possible on your date.
Kusasenri grassland
Kusasenri-ga-hama is a broad grassy plain set inside an ancient crater at the foot of Mount Eboshi, with Nakadake smoking just beyond it. After rain, shallow ponds collect on the meadow and reflect the sky, and horses graze freely across the green. It is one of the most photographed spots in Aso Kuju National Park and the highlight for many on this Mount Aso day trip from Fukuoka.
You have about an hour here to stroll the paths, sit on the grass or pay locally for a short horse ride. Lunch is also taken around Kusasenri at your own expense, with simple restaurants and a visitor area nearby. The best time to visit Kusasenri is late spring to early autumn, when the grass is green; in late autumn it turns golden, and winter can bring frost and snow.
Takachiho Gorge by boat or on foot
Takachiho Gorge was carved by the Gokase River through layers of lava that flowed from Aso's eruptions and cooled into tall basalt columns. The cliffs rise steeply on both sides of a narrow channel of emerald water, and Manai Falls drops straight into it, a scene that has made the gorge a national scenic site. Many travellers call it the most beautiful gorge in Japan.
In the default option you board a hand-rowed boat, with up to three guests per boat, and row beneath the waterfall and the stone bridges above. Booking the boat yourself is hard, because slots sell out fast, so having it reserved is a real plus. The walking-only option follows the stone-step trail along the rim instead, about thirty minutes there and back. Is Takachiho Gorge worth visiting? On a clear afternoon, absolutely.
Takachiho and the myths of Kyushu
Takachiho, in the mountains of Miyazaki Prefecture, is known in Japan as the land of myths, the place where, according to legend, the gods descended from heaven. Shrines, sacred trees and stories surround the gorge, and the town keeps a calm, rural rhythm far from the big cities. Your guide shares some of these legends during the visit.
Getting to Takachiho without a car is slow, as there is no train line and buses are few, which is why a Takachiho Gorge day trip from Fukuoka by coach is the easiest way to see it. The best time to visit Takachiho Gorge is autumn, when the maples turn red, or early summer, when the cliffs are lush green. After about an hour at the gorge, the coach heads back to Hakata in the evening.
The route from Fukuoka
The day starts at 07:50 near Hakata Station, the main railway hub of Fukuoka. The drive south to Aso takes about three hours on the expressway through the hills of Kumamoto, with a rest stop on the way, and the coach then crosses the caldera to Kusasenri and continues east to Takachiho.
The return drive takes close to three hours, so expect to arrive back in Fukuoka in the evening, after a long but rewarding day. Because traffic and conditions on the mountain can change, do not book dinners, flights or bullet trains for the evening of your tour. A power bank for your phone and some cash for lunch and small purchases are useful to bring.
