Full Description
Takachiho Gorge and Manai Falls
Takachiho Gorge is a narrow canyon cut by the Gokase River through lava from ancient Aso eruptions, which cooled into tall columns of basalt. The walls rise steeply over a ribbon of clear, emerald water, and Manai Falls pours straight down the cliff into the river, the image most people picture when they search for Takachiho Gorge. It is protected as a national scenic site and natural monument.
You spend about one and a half hours here, the longest stop of the day. In the default option you row your own small boat, with up to three guests per boat, right under the waterfall, a slot that is hard to secure on your own. Everyone also has time for the stone-step trail above the river, about thirty minutes there and back, with viewpoints over the falls and the old stone bridges.
Takachiho Amaterasu Railway
The Takachiho line once linked the town with the coast, until typhoon damage closed it in 2005. Today a short stretch lives on as the Takachiho Amaterasu Railway, where a small open-air carriage rolls slowly through tunnels and forest and out onto a very high railway bridge above the river valley, pausing so passengers can enjoy the view straight down.
The ride lasts around half an hour there and back, and the carriages are open, so you feel the mountain air the whole way. The train ticket is not included in the tour and is bought on site, with your guide helping at the station; you can also choose to skip it and stay on the platform area. It is a gentle, nostalgic ride and a favourite with families and photographers.
Amanoyasukawara cave shrine
Amanoyasukawara is a wide, shallow cave above the Iwato River, a short walk from the Amano Iwato Shrine. According to Japanese mythology, this is where the eight million gods gathered to plan how to lure the sun goddess Amaterasu out of the rock cave where she had hidden, plunging the world into darkness. A small shrine stands at the back of the cave.
Over the years visitors have built thousands of small stone towers on the cave floor, each one a quiet wish, and you can add your own. The path follows the river through cedar forest, and the atmosphere is calm and sacred. About an hour here leaves time for the walk, the cave and the small shops near the shrine before the drive back.
Takachiho, the land of myths
Takachiho lies in the northern mountains of Miyazaki Prefecture and is known across Japan as the setting of the oldest legends, from the descent of the gods to the story of the hidden sun. Shrines, sacred trees and rice terraces surround the small town, and life moves at a slower pace than in Fukuoka.
How to get to Takachiho from Fukuoka is the main question for most travellers: there is no direct train, buses are infrequent and the roads wind through the mountains. A guided Takachiho Gorge day trip from Fukuoka solves this, with transport and timing handled for you. Autumn foliage in mid to late November and fresh greenery in early summer are the best times to visit Takachiho Gorge.
The journey from Fukuoka
The coach leaves at 07:50 from near Hakata Station and drives about three hours south through Kyushu, with a rest stop on the way. Short drives of twenty to thirty minutes link the gorge, the railway and the cave, so the day flows easily once you arrive in Takachiho.
The return trip takes about three and a half hours, bringing you back to Hakata in the evening. On weekends and public holidays the order of the stops may change because of traffic. When the group is small, the driver may also act as your guide. Avoid booking dinners, flights or bullet trains for the evening of your trip.
