Full Description

Gujo Hachiman: the water town of Gifu

Gujo Hachiman is a small castle town in Gifu Prefecture, set where the Yoshida and Nagara rivers meet. Its streets have kept the look of the Edo period: rows of wooden townhouses with low eaves, narrow lanes and stone-lined channels of fresh spring water running right past the doors. The national government has protected the old quarter as a district of important traditional buildings, and locals still use the water channels to rinse vegetables and cool drinks in summer.

On this Gujo Hachiman tour you have about an hour of free time, enough to follow a water lane, cross the river bridges and look up at the white hilltop castle above town. Gujo is also famous for its summer dance festival, when residents and visitors dance in the streets for many nights. It is the calmest stop of the day and a lovely first taste of rural Japan, about 1.5 hours from Nagoya by coach.

Hida Takayama: the old castle town in the mountains

Hida Takayama grew rich in the Edo period as a merchant and craft town in the Hida highlands, and its Sanmachi district still looks the part: dark wooden houses with latticed fronts, cloth curtains over shop doors and narrow streets lined with workshops. Many visitors call it a small Kyoto of the mountains. Local carpenters were so skilled that Hida craftsmen were sent to build temples in the old capitals, and their tradition lives on in the furniture and woodwork sold here.

This Takayama day trip from Nagoya gives you about 2 hours, the longest stop of the day, so you can stroll the old streets, browse craft and candy shops, try local snacks such as grilled rice dumplings or Hida beef skewers, and buy a small sarubobo charm doll. Is Takayama worth visiting? For lovers of traditional streets it is one of the best preserved old towns in Japan.

Shirakawa-go: UNESCO village of gassho-zukuri farmhouses

Shirakawa-go sits in a narrow valley of the Sho River, deep in the mountains of Gifu. Together with Gokayama it was listed by UNESCO in 1995 for its gassho-zukuri farmhouses, whose steep thatched roofs look like hands joined in prayer. The roofs were built without nails to shed heavy winter snow, and the large attics once housed silkworm farming. Villagers still re-thatch the roofs together, a tradition of mutual help that keeps the village alive.

On this Shirakawa-go tour you have about 1.5 hours in the main village of Ogimachi to walk among the farmhouses, rice paddies and small shrines, and to visit one of the open houses if you wish. Wondering about the best time to visit Shirakawa-go? Every season works: green rice fields in summer, red and gold slopes in autumn and deep snow in winter.

The road through the Japanese Alps

Part of the charm of this day trip is the journey itself. From Nagoya the coach climbs north through Gifu Prefecture into the Hida highlands, following river valleys, forests and mountain ridges that turn bright with colour in autumn. The drives between stops are about 1 to 1.5 hours, with the longer return of about 2.5 hours, so the day keeps a comfortable rhythm of travel and walking.

Doing all three towns on your own by public transport means several bus and train changes and careful timing. Here the route is planned for you, the guide explains what makes each place special, and you simply step off the coach into each old town. It is the easiest way to see Gujo, Takayama and Shirakawa-go in a single day from Nagoya.
