Full Description

The Shakotan Peninsula coastal drive

The Shakotan Peninsula juts into the Sea of Japan west of Otaru, and its coast is part of a protected quasi-national park of cliffs, sea stacks and small fishing villages. The road from Sapporo takes about two hours, first along Ishikari Bay, then through tunnels and around headlands where the water suddenly turns an intense blue-green that locals call Shakotan Blue.

In a private car this long road becomes part of the pleasure: your driver-guide stops at viewpoints when the light is good, adjusts timing for photos and suggests a lunch stop in a fishing village at your own expense. From June to August Shakotan is famous across Hokkaido for fresh sea urchin bowls, and grilled fish and seafood rice are easy to find all year; halal choices on the peninsula are very limited, so ask us for tips.

Cape Kamui and its ridge trail

Cape Kamui is the signature sight of any Shakotan day trip. From the car park you pass a wooden gate that recalls an old rule, kept until the mid-19th century, forbidding women to go beyond it. Then a narrow trail of paths and stairs, a little under a kilometre each way, follows the spine of the headland to a white lighthouse first lit in 1888.

At the tip, the sea falls away on both sides and the pointed Kamui Rock rises from the waves, a sacred spot in the stories of the Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido. Allow about an hour for the round trip and photos. Is Cape Kamui worth visiting? On a clear day few places in Hokkaido feel so dramatic. The trail usually closes in winter and in strong wind, so check the season with us; best time to visit Cape Kamui is from late spring to early autumn.

Shimamui Coast

A short drive from the cape, Shimamui Coast is a sheltered cove of rocky islets and astonishingly clear water. A short tunnel once dug by herring fishermen leads to an observation deck where the whole bay opens below you, and on calm days you can see the rocks on the sea bed from high above.

A steep path continues down to the shore for those who want to touch the water, while others are happy with the view from the deck. Your driver-guide gives you about an hour here and explains how the herring trade shaped this coast in the 19th century. It is one of the best photo stops of the day, especially in the late morning when the sun lights up the turquoise shallows.

Otaru Canal and the warehouse district

In the afternoon the road brings you back east to Otaru, the old port that once handled much of Hokkaido's trade. Otaru Canal was completed in 1923 so barges could carry goods from ships to the waterfront warehouses. After the port modernised, part of the canal was filled in, and the remaining stretch was restored in the 1980s as a stone promenade lit by gas lamps.

The grey stone warehouses that line the water now hold cafés and shops, and the view from the bridges is the town's classic picture. Your driver-guide parks nearby and you stroll for about an hour along the canal and through the old banking quarter, once called the Wall Street of the North for its grand stone buildings. Evening light and winter snow make the canal especially atmospheric.

Sakaimachi Street and the Otaru Music Box Museum

Sakaimachi Street is the town's main shopping lane, lined with restored merchant houses full of glass studios, craft shops and sweet makers. Otaru glass began with oil lamps and floats for the herring fleet, and today you can watch artisans blow glass or shop for cups, lamps and ornaments.

The street ends at Marchen Crossing, with its steam clock that sings every quarter hour, and the Otaru Music Box Museum, set in a brick and timber building from 1912 and filled with music boxes of every size. Enjoy about an hour of free time here before your driver-guide takes you back to central Sapporo, about an hour away by expressway, ending a long and varied day by the sea.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private tour?

It is private. The vehicle and the driver-guide are reserved only for your party for the whole day.

Can we change the itinerary or the pace?

Yes, within the 10 hours. You can spend longer at Cape Kamui or in Otaru, add photo stops or shorten a stop; your driver-guide adapts the timing on the day.

How many people fit in the vehicle?

The default option is a premium minivan for up to 5 guests. Larger private options are available: a van for up to 9 guests and a minibus for up to 17 guests.

Is the price per person or per group?

The price covers the whole vehicle, not each person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each vehicle option.

Is hotel pickup included?

Pickup and drop-off are included in central Sapporo, near Sapporo Station or the Sapporo TV Tower; we confirm the exact point after booking.

What is included?

The private air-conditioned vehicle for the 10-hour route, an English-speaking driver-guide, fuel, motorway tolls, parking, and time at Cape Kamui, Shimamui Coast, Otaru Canal and Sakaimachi Street.

How long is the tour?

About 10 hours, starting around 09:00 and returning to central Sapporo in the early evening.

Is it suitable for children or travellers with reduced mobility?

Children who can manage stairs enjoy it, but the cape trail and the cove path are not suitable for wheelchairs. Those who prefer not to walk can enjoy the views near the car parks and the flat canal area in Otaru.

What should I bring?

Sturdy shoes, a windproof jacket, sunglasses and sun cream in summer, warm layers outside summer, water, and money for lunch and shopping.

What is the best time of year for this tour?

Late spring to early autumn, when the Cape Kamui trail is open and the sea shows its brightest blue. Clear mornings give the best colours; June to August is sea urchin season on the peninsula.

What happens if the Cape Kamui trail is closed?

The trail closes in strong wind, snow or for road safety. We tell you before the tour if we know in advance, and your driver-guide uses other coastal viewpoints where conditions allow.
