Overview

This ski and snowboard day takes you from central Sapporo to Sapporo Teine, the mountain resort on the city's north-western edge that hosted alpine and sliding events at the 1972 Winter Olympics. The default option is a small-group class of up to six people: a return transfer from Sapporo Station, full ski or snowboard gear with helmet and goggles, lift access during the lesson and four hours of coaching with a certified instructor, who also takes photos of you on the snow. It suits beginners and improving skiers who want real progress in one day, and families or friends who prefer a small group to a big ski school. Other options include private lessons with hotel pickup, an evening class on lit slopes, and a gear-and-lift package without lessons.

Full Description

Sapporo Teine, the city's Olympic mountain

Sapporo Teine spreads over the slopes of Mount Teine, a peak of just over a thousand metres that rises directly behind the north-western suburbs of Sapporo. In 1972 it hosted the slalom and giant slalom races and the bobsleigh and luge events of the Winter Olympics, and an Olympic monument still stands near the top. Today it is the most popular ski area for people living in Sapporo, thanks to its reliable snow and short travel time.

From the upper runs, clear days reveal a remarkable panorama: the grid of Sapporo below, the sea of Ishikari Bay and, in the distance, the snowy ranges to the west. Is Sapporo Teine worth visiting for a short trip? For travellers staying in the city who want a proper mountain without a long transfer, it is the best-placed resort, about 40 minutes by road from Sapporo Station.

Olympia and Highland zones

Teine is divided into two connected areas. The lower Olympia zone has wide, gentle slopes, a kids' snow park and night lighting, which makes it the perfect classroom for first-timers and young skiers. The upper Highland zone offers longer and steeper runs, tree-lined courses and some of the deepest powder close to the city, favoured by experienced skiers and snowboarders.

Your instructor chooses the area that suits your group's level. Complete beginners usually start on the gentle lower runs, then move to longer slopes as confidence grows. The best time to visit Sapporo Teine for powder is January and February, when cold air from Siberia brings frequent light snowfall; December and March can be quieter, with softer snow late in the season.

Your lesson: small group or private

In the default option, a certified instructor teaches a group of up to six people for four hours, covering the basics of balance, turning and stopping for beginners, or technique and confidence on varied terrain for those with some experience. You can choose skiing or snowboarding when booking. Lift access is included during the lesson, and extra lift hours can be bought on site if you want to keep going afterwards.

If you prefer one-to-one attention, the private options give your party its own instructor with hotel pickup within 3 km of Sapporo Station: a full day with a six-hour lesson, a half day with three hours, or an afternoon-to-evening session on the floodlit slopes. When more than four guests book a private class, a second instructor joins so everyone keeps close coaching.

Gear, timing and practical tips

The group class includes a full set of ski or snowboard equipment with helmet and goggles, prepared from the sizes you send when booking, so please share each guest's height, weight and shoe size accurately. Warm waterproof clothing and gloves are your own responsibility. Lunch is not included; the resort has restaurants with Japanese dishes, though halal food is not available, so bring snacks if needed.

How to get to Sapporo Teine? Public buses run from the city, but carrying rented gear makes the included transfer much easier. The day lasts about seven hours from the 08:00 departure. Lockers are available at the resort for a small fee. After skiing, Sapporo has some halal restaurants for dinner, and we are happy to recommend them or arrange private transfers for the rest of your stay.
