Full Description

Casa Batlló and the Block of Discord on Passeig de Gràcia

The tour begins on Passeig de Gràcia, Barcelona's grandest boulevard, in front of Casa Amatller, on the stretch nicknamed the Block of Discord because three rival modernist houses stand almost side by side. Next door rises Casa Batlló, which Gaudí transformed between 1904 and 1906 into a building that seems alive: a facade shimmering with broken-tile mosaic, balconies shaped like masks, columns like bones and a roof that curves like the back of a dragon.

Inside, your guide takes you straight to the most remarkable rooms: the noble floor with its swirling ceiling and wooden doors shaped to the hand, the light well lined with tiles that grow paler towards the bottom so the light spreads evenly, and the ventilation openings that work like gills. If you are comparing Casa Batlló tickets with a guided visit, this is where an expert makes the difference.

Casa Milà, La Pedrera

A short walk up Passeig de Gràcia stands Casa Milà, built between 1906 and 1912 and nicknamed La Pedrera, the stone quarry, because its undulating limestone facade looked so raw and massive to people at the time. Wrought-iron balconies twist like seaweed across the front, and on the roof the famous chimneys rise like helmeted guardians.

On this tour you see Casa Milà from the outside, which is the best way to appreciate the movement of the whole facade, while your guide explains how Gaudí built it without load-bearing walls, using a frame of pillars and arches. Together with Casa Batlló and Park Güell, it is part of the group of Gaudí works listed by UNESCO as World Heritage.

Park Güell

Park Güell was begun in 1900 on a hillside above the city as an exclusive garden suburb for its patron, but only two houses were ever built, and since 1926 it has been a public park. Its Monumental Zone, now ticketed, holds the most loved images of Gaudí's Barcelona: the mosaic salamander on the entrance stairway, the Hypostyle Room with its forest of columns, and the long serpentine bench around the great terrace, with views over the city to the sea.

Entry lines can be very long, so the skip-the-line Park Güell tickets in this tour save precious time. Your guide spends about an hour here, showing how the viaducts and paths imitate trees and caves and pointing out the best photo spots. The park is not included in the shorter highlights option.

The Sagrada Família basilica

The Sagrada Família was begun in 1882, and Gaudí devoted more than forty years to it, the last of them almost exclusively. Still under construction, it is the most visited monument in Spain. Its central Tower of Jesus Christ, designed to reach 172.5 m, has made it the tallest church in the world. Outside, the Nativity Façade bursts with sculpted life, while the Passion Façade is stark and angular.

Inside, you spend a full guided hour beneath columns that branch like trees, while stained glass floods the nave with cool blues and greens on one side and warm reds and oranges on the other. Unlike most tours, you then go down to the museum below the basilica to see Gaudí's plaster models, drawings and calculations, and the view of his tomb in the crypt. Sagrada Família opening hours and timed tickets are handled for you.

The Eixample district between the visits

Between Park Güell and the Sagrada Família the tour makes a short break in the Eixample, the grid-planned district of the nineteenth century whose chamfered street corners and wide avenues give Barcelona its distinctive shape. It is the perfect moment for a coffee, a snack and a rest before the final visit.

The Eixample is also the showcase of Catalan modernisme, and walking through it you notice ornate doorways, iron balconies and tiled facades on ordinary apartment buildings. At the end of the tour your guide gladly suggests where to eat nearby or what to see next, so you can continue exploring at your own pace, perhaps with a stroll along the elegant Rambla de Catalunya.
