Overview

This Sagrada Família guided tour lets you choose how deeply you explore Gaudí's basilica. In the default option, a small group with a licensed English-speaking guide starts outside, decoding the Nativity and Passion façades, then enters with skip-the-line tickets to walk beneath the tree-like columns and the glowing stained glass of the nave, with clear explanations of the symbolism, the engineering and the story of a church under construction since 1882. The visit lasts about 1.5 hours from 10:00. If you already have your own entry plans or prefer a shorter outing, the 1-hour exterior tour covers the façades and the construction story without entering. There is no hotel pickup: we meet at the start of Avinguda de Gaudí, a few steps from the basilica.

Full Description

The Nativity Façade

The Nativity Façade, facing the rising sun, is the part of the basilica most closely shaped by Gaudí himself and is listed by UNESCO as World Heritage. Its three portals, dedicated to Faith, Hope and Charity, overflow with carved figures, animals, plants and stars, telling the story of the birth and childhood of Jesus in stone that seems to melt and grow like a living thing.

Your guide shows you where to look: the tortoises carrying the columns, the cypress tree crowned with doves, the musicians and the details hidden high on the portals. Above rise four bell towers with perforated spires and colourful mosaic tips. Morning light is the best time to see this façade, which is why the interior tour starts at 10:00.

The Passion Façade and the future Glory Façade

On the opposite side, the Passion Façade was built decades after Gaudí's death, following his instructions to make it stark and dramatic. Angular, almost skeletal sculptures tell the story of the last days of Jesus, and leaning columns like bones support the porch. The contrast with the Nativity Façade is one of the most striking lessons of the visit.

Your guide also explains the Glory Façade, the largest of the three, still under construction on the main side of the basilica, and the overall plan of eighteen towers. The central Tower of Jesus Christ, designed to reach 172.5 m, has made the Sagrada Família the tallest church in the world. The exterior tour ends here with a clear picture of the whole building.

Inside the basilica: a forest of stone and light

Entering the Sagrada Família is one of the great moments of any trip to Barcelona. The columns branch like trees towards a vaulted ceiling of star-like openings, creating the feeling of walking through a stone forest. Through the stained-glass windows, cool blues and greens flood one side of the nave, while warm reds and oranges glow on the other as the day moves on.

With skip-the-line entry you avoid the ticket queues, and your guide reveals the geometry Gaudí used to carry the weight without buttresses, the religious symbols hidden in the details and the way nature inspired every form. The interior part of the visit lasts about an hour, and afterwards you are free to stay inside and explore at your own pace.

Planning your visit: tickets, hours and dress code

The Sagrada Família has been under construction since 1882 and is now the most visited monument in Spain, so Sagrada Família tickets sell out days ahead in busy seasons. Booking a guided visit with entry included is the easiest way to secure a time and understand what you see, especially on a first trip to Barcelona.

Sagrada Família opening hours run from morning to early evening, with shorter hours on Sundays because of religious services. Everyone must cover shoulders and knees to go inside. Is the Sagrada Família worth visiting inside? Almost every visitor says yes: the exterior impresses, but the interior is what people remember. Allow time afterwards for Plaça de Gaudí, the park opposite with its pond reflecting the towers.
