Full Description
Figueres and the Dalí Theatre-Museum
Figueres, a market town near the French border, is where the surrealist painter was born in 1904 and where he chose to create his own museum. The Dalí Theatre-Museum opened in 1974 inside the old municipal theatre, which had been left in ruins by a fire in 1939. Its red walls are topped with giant eggs and studded with bread-shaped ornaments, and a glass geodesic dome crowns the former stage, beneath which the painter is buried.
Inside, the collection is not arranged by date or theme: the painter wanted visitors to experience it as a single work. Highlights include the rainy car in the courtyard, the ceiling painting of the Palace of the Wind and rooms that become optical illusions when seen from the right spot. Dalí Museum tickets are included in this tour with skip-the-ticket-line access, and the guide gives the background before you explore, for about an hour and a half.
Cadaqués, the white village of the Costa Brava
From September to June the tour crosses the hills of the Cap de Creus peninsula to Cadaqués. Isolated for centuries by mountains on one side and the sea on the other, the village kept its character: white houses with blue shutters, steep lanes paved with slate and fishing boats pulled up on pebble beaches. Above it all rises the church of Santa Maria, which holds a richly gilded Baroque altarpiece.
Many visitors ask whether a Cadaqués day trip from Barcelona is worth the drive. The road itself, winding over the bare hills with sea views at every turn, is part of the answer. You have free time here for lunch, with terraces serving fresh fish, seafood rice and suquet, the Catalan fish stew, or you can take a sandwich to the shore.
Portlligat and the Dalí House
Just over a kilometre north of Cadaqués lies the tiny cove of Portlligat, where the painter lived and worked for decades. He bought a fisherman's hut here in 1930 and gradually joined it to the neighbouring huts, creating a labyrinth of small whitewashed rooms, terraces and a studio facing the bay, with giant eggs on the roof and a garden of unusual sculptures.
Visits inside the Dalí House are in small timed groups, and the entrance fee is paid locally on the day. The house is closed on 1 January and from 9 January to 10 February, but even then you can see it from the outside and walk along the cove. It is one of the most personal places linked to the painter and the best way to understand how this landscape shaped his work.
Púbol Castle and a medieval coastal town (July and August)
In July and August the route changes: after Figueres you visit a medieval coastal town with time for lunch in one of its local restaurants, followed by Púbol Castle. This Gothic castle in the small village of Púbol was bought by the painter in 1969 and restored as a retreat for his wife. Its rooms mix medieval stone with theatrical touches, and the garden holds tall elephant sculptures on slender legs.
Entrance to Púbol Castle is paid locally. In summer there may also be time at Platja del Castell, an unspoilt beach on the Costa Brava, so bring swimwear and a towel. This summer version suits travellers who want art, history and the coast in a single Costa Brava day trip from Barcelona.
The Costa Brava and the road from Barcelona
The Costa Brava, the rugged coast, stretches from north of Barcelona to the French border, with pine-covered headlands, rocky coves and clear water. The northern part around Cap de Creus is the wildest: the easternmost point of the Iberian Peninsula, where wind-carved rocks and empty hills have inspired painters and poets.
The drive from Barcelona to Figueres takes about one hour and forty-five minutes along the motorway past Girona, and the full day lasts about 11 hours. The best time to visit Cadaqués is late spring or early autumn, when the sea is calm, the light is clear and the village is quieter than in summer. On the way the minibus crosses the Empordà plain, a patchwork of fields and stone villages at the foot of the Pyrenees.
