Full Description

Terra Natura – a wildlife park without barriers

Terra Natura opened in Benidorm in 2005 as a new kind of wildlife park. Instead of cages, it uses landscape design, water channels, rocks and planting to separate visitors from animals, so you watch them in settings that recreate their natural habitats. Many of the species are endangered, and the park works to raise awareness of their conservation, with information points along the paths explaining each animal's biology and threats.

The gardens are as much a part of the visit as the animals, with thousands of trees, shrubs and ground plants from many parts of the world. Plan four to five hours to see everything at a relaxed pace, following the circular route that leads you from one habitat to the next.

Fire, lava and poisonous species

Your journey begins with fire: the entrance area is themed as a volcanic landscape, where rivers of lava-coloured water flow between exotic gardens and lead you into the park. Here you discover mineral formations and an exhibition of giant insects, tarantulas, scorpions, reptiles, poisonous plants and mushrooms, a fascinating close look at some of nature's most dangerous creatures.

This indoor and shaded area is a good first stop on hot days and a favourite with children who love bugs and reptiles. Information panels explain how venom works, why these species matter and how to recognise them in the wild. Take your time here before moving on to the larger outdoor habitats, where the scale of the park really opens up.

Elephants, birds of prey and keeper talks

The shows are the highlight for many visitors. In the elephant demonstration, the keepers explain how these giants live and show their strength, intelligence and agility, and you may see them being fed. The birds of prey display brings peregrine falcons, an eagle owl, a common kestrel and Harris's hawks flying low over the audience, showing their speed and hunting skills.

Throughout the day keepers give talks at different habitats, where you can ask questions and learn about the animals' care. Check the daily schedule at the entrance and plan your route around the show times so you do not miss them. Keep your eyes open between the shows too: as you walk the paths, you never know which animal might surprise you or which bird might fly over your head.
