Overview

This guided bike ride is the easiest way to see village life in Bali: about eighty per cent of the route runs downhill, from the Kintamani highlands facing Mount Batur towards Ubud. After hotel pickup in the Ubud area you stop at a viewpoint over the volcano, then cycle on quiet village roads with stops at a local school, a traditional family compound, a village temple and the rice fields, before a Balinese lunch at a local restaurant. The default option is a small shared group with an English-speaking guide, bicycle, helmet, water, refreshments and insurance. A private option, and combinations with river tubing or a quad bike ride, are also available. Morning and afternoon departures run every day.

Full Description

Kintamani and the Mount Batur viewpoint

The day begins with a scenic drive up to Kintamani, the highland district on the rim of the great Batur caldera at around fourteen hundred metres. From the viewpoint you look across the crater to Mount Batur, an active volcano whose black lava flows from twentieth-century eruptions still streak its slopes, with Lake Batur shining at its foot and, on clear days, the peak of Mount Agung beyond. The whole area belongs to the Batur UNESCO Global Geopark.

This is where your guide fits the bikes and helmets and gives a short safety briefing, so tell us your height when you book to help us prepare the right frame size. The air at Kintamani is fresh and often cool in the morning, which makes the start of the ride very pleasant. A Mount Batur bike tour is a relaxed alternative to the pre-dawn hike for travellers who want the volcano views without the climb.

Village roads, school and village temple

From the rim the route follows small village roads that wind down through orange groves, bamboo forest and vegetable gardens. These roads are used by local people too, so you will share them with the occasional scooter, car or small truck; the guide sets a gentle pace and the group rides in single file. There is only one short section of about three minutes on a main road, simply to cross from one village to the next.

Along the way you stop at a local school to hear how education works in rural Bali, and at a traditional village temple where your guide explains the daily offerings, the temple festivals and the role of the community in religious life. These stops are informal and change with the day's activities, which makes every Kintamani to Ubud bike tour a little different.

A traditional Balinese family compound

One of the most memorable stops is a visit to a family compound, the traditional Balinese house layout in which several generations live together behind a carved gateway. Inside, separate pavilions serve as the kitchen, the sleeping quarters and the place for ceremonies, and in the most sacred corner stands the family temple with its shrines to the ancestors, all arranged according to the island's sacred directions towards the mountain and the sea.

You are welcomed as guests, can ask questions and may see the family preparing offerings of flowers and rice in palm-leaf baskets, or working with coconut, coffee or crafts. Cultural immersion is the point of this Bali village cycling tour: the guide encourages you to talk with residents and learn how daily life, religion and work are woven together in a Balinese village.

Rice fields towards Ubud and Balinese lunch

In the lower part of the ride the landscape opens into terraced rice fields, the classic green scenery of central Bali. Your guide explains the Subak system, the cooperative irrigation that shares water between farmers through canals and water temples, and you may see farmers planting, weeding or harvesting depending on the season. This rice field bike ride section is mostly flat or gently downhill, with plenty of photo stops.

The ride ends near Ubud, where a Balinese lunch is served at a local restaurant before our driver takes you back to your hotel in the Ubud area. On the afternoon departure lunch is served first at midday and the cycling starts right after. At the finish point you can also join a river tubing adventure run by the village community, or a quad bike ride, if you choose the combined options.
