Full Description
Canggu, Bali's surf village
Canggu stretches along the west coast of Bali north of Seminyak, a former rice-farming area that has become the island's best-known surf town. Its beaches of dark volcanic sand, including Batu Bolong, Berawa, Echo Beach and Pererenan, face the Indian Ocean and receive swell almost all year. Between them, rice fields, cafés and surf shops line the lanes, and every morning the water fills with boards of every size.
What makes Canggu ideal for a first lesson is the mix of breaks: some spots offer soft, rolling waves over sand and reef that are friendly to beginners, while others break harder for experienced surfers. Your instructor chooses the spot and the timing according to the tide and the day's conditions, which is the key to learning safely. A Canggu surf lesson is also a lovely way to experience the coast before a sunset on the beach.
How the 2-hour surf lesson works
The lesson starts on the sand. After you change, your instructor helps you choose a surfboard that suits your height, weight and experience, usually a wide soft-top longboard for beginners because it is stable and forgiving. On land you practise the basic movements: how to lie on the board, paddle, and jump to your feet in a single smooth pop-up, as well as how to fall safely and protect yourself with the board.
Then you follow your teacher into the water. In the white water close to shore the instructor helps you catch your first waves, gives instant feedback after each ride and gradually moves you towards green, unbroken waves as your confidence grows. You can ask any questions about technique, wave selection or surf etiquette. At the end you return the board, rinse off in the shower and change, usually with a big smile.
Choose your level: group, two-to-one, intermediate or private
The default option pairs just two students with one instructor, a format that suits beginners and improvers who want more personal coaching and faster progress than in a large class. If you are travelling alone without a surf buddy, the group class is a sociable choice where you learn alongside people from different countries, with a single midday start.
Surfers who can already stand up and ride the white water can book the intermediate lesson, again with two students per instructor, to work on paddling into green waves, angling along the face and basic turns. For the most attention, the private one-to-one lesson gives you an instructor entirely to yourself, ideal for nervous first-timers, children or anyone who wants to fix specific habits. All options last two hours and include the board and shower.
Best time to surf in Canggu and safety
Surfing in Canggu is possible all year. The dry season from April to October brings steady swell and morning offshore winds on the west coast, which create clean waves; the rainy season from November to March can bring onshore winds, yet lessons still run, often in the early morning when the sea is calmer. That is why several start times are offered, from 07:00 to the late afternoon.
Bring a towel and reef-safe sunscreen, and drink plenty of water before you go in, as the tropical sun is strong. If you cannot swim, send us a message after booking so that the instructor can suggest the right tide and wave conditions for you. Children from four years old can join, and the private lesson is often the best choice for young surfers or anyone who wants to learn to surf in Bali at their own pace.
