Full Description
Taman Ayun Temple, Mengwi
Taman Ayun, whose name means beautiful garden, was built in the 17th century as the royal family temple of the Mengwi kingdom. It stands on raised ground surrounded by a wide moat, and inside its courtyards rise slender tiered meru shrines with black palm-fibre roofs, carved stone gates and neatly kept lawns. It is one of the finest examples of traditional Balinese temple architecture.
Taman Ayun is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site that celebrates Bali's subak water system, because the temple played a central role in managing irrigation for the surrounding kingdom. Visitors walk around the outer wall and look into the inner courtyard, which is reserved for worship. Plan about 45 minutes here; it is usually the first stop of the day, when the light is soft and the grounds are quiet.
Ulun Danu Beratan Temple on Lake Beratan
Ulun Danu Beratan Temple sits on the western shore of Lake Beratan near Bedugul, in the cool highlands about 1,200 metres above sea level. Founded in the 17th century and dedicated to the goddess of the lake, it is famous for the shrines that stand on small islands just off the shore, so that the temple appears to float on the water when the lake is full.
Its tiered shrines, the mist on the mountains and the flower gardens make it one of the most photographed places in Bali. Allow about an hour to stroll the gardens and lakeside paths. Lunch is not included, but there are local restaurants near the lake where you can stop if you wish. Bring a light jacket, because the temperature here is noticeably cooler than on the coast.
Jatiluwih Rice Terraces
The Jatiluwih Rice Terraces cover the lower slopes of Mount Batukaru in the Tabanan regency and are the largest and most impressive terraced rice landscape in Bali. Their name is often translated as truly beautiful. They form part of the UNESCO-listed subak cultural landscape, in which farmers share water through a network of canals, tunnels and water temples organised by village cooperatives for over a thousand years.
Walking trails run between the paddies, and even a short walk gives sweeping views of green steps reaching towards the forested mountain. Many travellers ask about the best time to visit Jatiluwih: the fields change with the planting cycle, from flooded mirrors to bright green and golden before harvest, and just after harvest there may be little rice to see. Plan about an hour here.
Tanah Lot Temple at sunset
Tanah Lot is Bali's best-known sea temple, set on a rocky outcrop just off the shore in Beraban village, Tabanan. Built in the 16th century as one of a chain of temples guarding the island's coast, it is surrounded by the Indian Ocean at high tide and can be approached across the sand when the tide is low. A freshwater spring rises at the foot of the rock, and the inner shrine is reserved for Hindu worshippers.
The tour ends here in the late afternoon, because Tanah Lot sunset is the most memorable view of the day, with the temple silhouetted against an orange sky. Walk along the cliff paths for the classic angle, then meet our driver for the drive back. Traffic leaving Tanah Lot after sunset can be heavy, so expect a slower return to your hotel.
Why these sites are listed by UNESCO
In 2012 UNESCO inscribed the Cultural Landscape of Bali Province, recognising the subak system and the philosophy of harmony between people, nature and the divine that shapes it. Water from crater lakes and springs flows through temples and canals to the terraces, and each step of the farming year is linked to ceremonies. Taman Ayun and the Jatiluwih terraces are two key parts of that listing.
This tour lets you see that story from beginning to end: a royal water temple, a highland lake temple, the terraces the water feeds and finally the ocean at Tanah Lot. Our driver speaks English and can share practical tips, though the service does not include professional guiding inside the sites. Sarongs are provided at temple entrances when needed.
