Full Description
Mount Batur, Bali's Accessible Volcano
Mount Batur rises about 1,717 metres above sea level inside a vast caldera in the Kintamani region of northern Bali. It is an active volcano that last erupted in the 2000s, and its cone sits beside Lake Batur, the island's largest crater lake. For many travellers it is the most popular hike in Bali, because it can be done in a few hours and rewards you with one of the island's best views.
If you are wondering how difficult the Mount Batur hike is, the answer is moderate. The climb takes around two hours up steep, loose volcanic ground, and you should be reasonably fit. The trail is clear and busy with guides, so it suits most active adults without mountaineering experience, and we suggest wearing proper hiking shoes.
The Sunrise from the Summit
The hike begins in the middle of the night so that you reach the summit before the first light. From the top you watch the sky change colour above the clouds, with the outline of Mount Agung, Bali's highest volcano, to the east and Mount Abang across the lake. On clear mornings, the cone of Mount Rinjani on Lombok can appear in the distance.
The best time to hike Mount Batur for a clear sunrise is the dry season, from about April to October, though cloud can appear in any month. Bring a warm jacket, because the summit is cool and windy before the sun is up. Your guide will find a good spot and share the sunrise breakfast with you there.
Your Guide, the Trail and Breakfast
Guides are local experts who know the route, the weather and the safest pace for the group. They provide a torch and trekking pole, lead the way up in the dark and help with slippery sections. The trek is guided throughout, and you will be told when to rest and when to take photos.
Breakfast is simple and served at the summit: bread, a boiled egg, biscuits, fruit and steamed banana, with tea, coffee and water. Tell us about any dietary needs when you book. After the descent, you can use the lounge, with toilets and limited shower access, before heading to your next stop.
Kintamani Highlands and the Coffee Plantation
On the options with transfers, the tour includes the Kintamani ticket for the area around the volcano, and it usually ends with a visit to a local coffee plantation. You see the coffee plants, spices and fruit trees that grow in the fertile volcanic soil, and hear how Balinese coffee is grown and roasted. The stop is a relaxed way to end the morning before the ride back.
Kintamani is a cool highland district with wide views of the caldera, and it is a pleasant stop on its own. If you have more time, a day in Ubud or a visit to the temples of central Bali fits well after a night of little sleep. Most travellers choose to rest in the afternoon.
Pickup Times and Practical Planning
Because the trek starts long before dawn, pickups are in the middle of the night. Pickup is usually between about 1:15 and 3:00 AM depending on your hotel area, and the meeting-point options ask you to be at the location by a set time, for example 2:15 AM in Ubud. Your exact time is confirmed after booking, so keep your phone active the day before.
Return times depend on your hotel area, usually around 11 AM for Ubud and around midday for south Bali. If bad weather makes the hike unsafe, you will be contacted and can reschedule. The suggested minimum age is 18, though fit children may join, and the hike is not suitable for people with heart or back problems.
