Full Description

My Son Sanctuary: the holy valley of the Cham

My Son Sanctuary lies about 40 km west of Hoi An, roughly an hour's drive, in a green valley ringed by mountains and watched over by the sharp peak the locals call Cat's Tooth. From the 4th to the 13th century it was the religious heart of the Champa kingdom, whose rulers built brick temples here dedicated mainly to the Hindu god Shiva. The site was listed by UNESCO in 1999 as a rare example of a South-East Asian civilisation shaped by Indian culture.

Many towers were damaged by bombing during the war, but the restored groups still show how the Cham fitted fired bricks together almost without visible mortar, then carved them in place. That is why this My Son Sanctuary tour leaves at dawn: the stones glow in the low light, birds fill the forest and the paths are quiet. The site usually opens at about 06:00.

Inside My Son: temple groups, carvings and Cham dance

From the ticket office an electric shuttle and a short forest path lead to the temple groups, which archaeologists named with letters. Your guide walks you through the best-preserved clusters, explaining the gate towers, the main sanctuaries that held a linga, the small storehouses for offerings and the stelae inscribed in Sanskrit and old Cham. Look for dancing apsaras, lions and elephants carved into the brick and sandstone.

A small museum near the entrance displays sculptures and explains the restoration work, and a traditional Cham dance performance is held in a pavilion several times each morning. Allow about two hours in total. Is My Son worth visiting if you have seen Angkor? Yes: it is older, smaller and wilder, and in the early hours it feels like a discovery rather than a busy monument.

Marble Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son)

On the way back you stop for Mi Quang, the turmeric-yellow noodle dish of Quang Nam province, and a strong coffee, then drive about an hour to the Marble Mountains between Hoi An and Da Nang. These five limestone and marble hills are named after the five elements: metal, wood, water, fire and earth. The largest, Thuy Son or Water Mountain, is honeycombed with caves and grottoes that have sheltered Buddhist shrines for centuries.

Stone stairs climb past Tam Thai and Linh Ung pagodas to Huyen Khong Cave, a vast chamber where shafts of sunlight fall through openings in the roof onto seated Buddha statues, best in the late morning when this tour arrives. Further up, lookouts open over the sea, the Han River plain and Da Nang. A lift serves part of the climb, paid separately. Plan about ninety minutes; the mountains usually open from early morning to late afternoon.

Non Nuoc stone-carving village

At the foot of the Marble Mountains lies Non Nuoc, a village that has carved stone for generations. Originally the craftsmen worked marble from the mountains themselves; today quarrying there is forbidden to protect the landscape, and the workshops use stone brought from other provinces. Walking along the main road you see artisans shaping everything from small animals and jewellery to towering statues for temples and gardens.

It is a good place to watch the craft up close and pick up a small souvenir if you wish, with no obligation to buy. Your guide can explain how to recognise real marble and how large pieces are shipped abroad. After this stop the van takes you back to Hoi An, around twenty-five minutes away, arriving around 12:30 with the afternoon free for the Old Town or the beach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private tour?

It is a shared small-group tour, usually no more than about thirteen guests, with an English-speaking guide. If you prefer your own guide and vehicle, see our private My Son Sanctuary tour from Hoi An.

Can we change the itinerary or the pace?

The order is fixed to reach My Son early and the Marble Mountains at the right time for the cave light. There is also an afternoon option with the Marble Mountains and the Son Tra peninsula at sunset, without My Son.

How many people are in the group?

Small groups travel in an air-conditioned vehicle and normally stay at about thirteen guests or fewer, so the guide can keep everyone together at the sites.

Is the price per person or per group?

The price is per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option for your date.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes, we pick you up from and return you to your hotel in central Hoi An.

What is included?

Hotel transfers, an air-conditioned vehicle, an English-speaking guide at My Son and the Marble Mountains, a Mi Quang breakfast, coffee and bottled water. Entrance tickets are paid at the gates.

How long is the tour?

About seven hours, from 05:30 to around 12:30.

Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?

Children who can manage an early start and stairs enjoy it. The Marble Mountains involve many steep stone steps and uneven cave floors, so the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with reduced mobility.

Why does the tour start so early?

My Son is in a hot valley with little shade. Arriving soon after opening means cooler air, softer light for photos and far fewer visitors.

What should I bring?

Cash for the entrance tickets, comfortable shoes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, a camera and clothes that cover shoulders and knees.

What is the best time of year to visit My Son and the Marble Mountains?

February to August is mostly dry and sunny, with the hottest days from May to August. September to December is the rainy season in central Vietnam, when tours still run but paths can be wet.
