Full Description

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and the road from Hue

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park protects one of the oldest and largest karst landscapes in Asia, a wild region of limestone peaks, rainforest and underground rivers near the Laos border. Its caves include some of the biggest ever found, and UNESCO listed the park as a World Heritage site in 2003 for its geology, then extended the listing in 2015 for its rich wildlife. For travellers based in Hue, a Phong Nha day trip from Hue is the easiest way to see it.

The park lies about 200 km north of Hue, roughly three and a half to four hours by road, which is why the day starts so early. The route follows the coastal plain past rice fields, sand dunes and fishing villages, with a short break in Dong Hoi, before turning inland towards the mountains. Bring a light jacket for the pre-dawn start; you can rest in the vehicle.

Paradise Cave (Thien Duong)

Paradise Cave was found by a local man in 2005, surveyed by an international caving team and opened to visitors in 2010. It stretches for about 31 km, and visitors explore the first kilometre or so on a well-lit wooden walkway. Inside, chambers rise up to around 100 m high and are filled with towering stalagmites, curtains of stalactites and glittering calcite formations, earning it the nickname of the underground palace.

To get there, an electric cart runs about 1.6 km through the forest, followed by a climb of around 500 steps to the entrance; take it slowly in the heat. Once inside, the air stays cool, around 20 °C all year, a welcome relief. Allow about two hours for the visit. Is Paradise Cave worth visiting? For many travellers it is the most beautiful show cave in Vietnam, and the reason they come to Phong Nha.

Dark Cave (Hang Toi) zipline and cave exploration

After lunch the adventure moves to Dark Cave, on the bank of the Chay River. The fun begins high above the water on a 400 m double-wire zipline, among the longest in South-East Asia, which carries you over the river to the mouth of the cave. From there you swim a short distance into the cave entrance wearing a life jacket and helmet, then continue on foot by the light of your headlamp.

As the name suggests, Dark Cave has no electric lighting, and the guides lead you through narrow passages of rock and clay where the only light is your own. It is an exciting, slightly muddy experience that gives a real sense of cave exploration, while staying safe and well supervised. Wear swimwear under your clothes and shoes that can get wet; lockers and showers are available on site.

Mud bath and Chay River activities

Deep inside Dark Cave you reach the highlight of the afternoon: a pool of thick, silky mud so dense that you float effortlessly, laughing with your companions in the glow of headlamps. For many guests it is the most unusual swim of their lives, and the mud is said to be good for the skin. Afterwards you swim back towards daylight to rinse off in the clear water of the river.

The rest of the afternoon is spent on the Chay River itself, kayaking back to the base, swimming in the calm green water and trying a short zipline that drops you into the river. Activities may be adjusted or suspended when the water is high, mostly from October to December. At around 16:00 the group returns to Dong Hoi, then continues to Hue, arriving at about 20:40.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private tour?

It is a shared small-group tour in an air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking guide. Options include the full adventure, a basic version without Dark Cave, a one-way version ending in Phong Nha or Dong Hoi, and transport with guide only.

Can we change the itinerary or the pace?

The programme is fixed because of the long drive and the cave schedules. You can choose the basic option if you prefer to skip the zipline and mud bath.

How many people are in the group?

The tour runs as a small group in one air-conditioned vehicle, so the guide can keep everyone together in the caves.

Is the price per person or per group?

The price is per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option for your date.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes, from hotels in central Hue, with drop-off back in Hue in the evening. Pickup outside the centre costs extra.

What is included?

Hotel transfers, the air-conditioned vehicle, an English-speaking guide, the Paradise Cave ticket, Dark Cave entry with the 400 m zipline, cave exploration and mud bath, kayaking and swimming on the Chay River, a Vietnamese lunch, bottled water and travel insurance.

How long is the tour?

About sixteen hours, with pickup around 04:30 and return to Hue around 20:40. Phong Nha is about 200 km from Hue.

Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?

Older children who are confident in water enjoy it, but the day is very long. Paradise Cave has around 500 steps and Dark Cave involves swimming and scrambling, so it is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with reduced mobility.

Do I need to be a good swimmer?

Life jackets are provided for Dark Cave and the river, but you should be comfortable in water. The basic option avoids the cave swim and the mud bath.

What should I bring?

Swimwear, a towel, a change of clothes, water shoes, sunscreen, a light jacket and a waterproof pouch for your phone.

When is the best time to visit Paradise Cave and Dark Cave?

February to August is best, with warm water from April. From October to December heavy rain can raise the river and lead to Dark Cave activities being changed or suspended.
