Full Description
Long Hung Church and Quang Tri Citadel
The first stops lie about an hour north of Hue in Quang Tri town. Long Hung Church was a parish church whose bell tower and walls were shattered in the fighting of 1972; the ruined façade, pocked with shell and bullet holes, has been kept as a protected relic beside the newer church. Your guide uses the site to set the scene for the day: why this narrow province became the front line of a divided country.
A few minutes away, Quang Tri Citadel was built by the Nguyen court in the early nineteenth century as a provincial fortress with a square brick wall and moat. In 1972 it was the scene of a long and devastating siege, and almost nothing survived. Today the grounds are a quiet memorial park with a moat, gates and a small exhibition. Both stops are short, about 20 minutes each, ideal for photos and context before the drive west.
Dakrong Bridge and Highway 9
From Dong Ha the road climbs west along Highway 9, the old strategic route that links the coast with the Lao border. The landscape changes quickly from rice fields to forested hills, ethnic minority hamlets and the green Dakrong River valley. Dakrong Bridge, a red arched bridge across the river, marks the point where wartime supply trails came down from the mountains to meet the highway.
We stop here for about 20 minutes so you can walk onto the bridge, photograph the valley and hear how the area was fought over for years. Many travellers say this drive is one of the most scenic parts of a DMZ tour from Hue, especially on clear mornings when mist lifts from the hills. The stop also breaks the long journey nicely before Khe Sanh, which sits about another 40 minutes up the road.
Khe Sanh Combat Base
Khe Sanh Combat Base sits on a plateau near the Lao border, about three hours by road from Hue. In early 1968 it was surrounded and shelled for weeks in one of the most famous sieges of the war. Today the former airstrip is still visible, and the site holds a small museum with photographs, maps and personal objects, plus reconstructed bunkers, trenches and displays of helicopters, a transport aircraft and armoured vehicles.
Plan about an hour here with your guide, who explains the battle from both sides and points out the surrounding hills. Many people ask how to get to Khe Sanh from Hue: there is no easy public transport, which is why a guided day tour with hotel pickup is the simplest way. After the visit we head back east for a lunch of local dishes at a family-run restaurant.
Hien Luong Bridge, the Ben Hai River and Doc Mieu Base
After the 1954 Geneva Accords, the Ben Hai River along the 17th parallel became the line dividing Vietnam, with a demilitarised zone on each bank. Hien Luong Bridge crossed it, and for years each side painted its half in a different colour and broadcast messages across the water. The restored blue and yellow bridge, a flag tower, a reunification monument and a small museum now form a national relic site.
You spend about 30 minutes walking across the bridge and around the monuments with your guide. A short drive away, Doc Mieu Base was a hilltop firebase and part of an electronic barrier line built across the DMZ; today only the ground, a memorial and a few relics remain, and we stop for about 10 minutes for photos and the view over the former no-man's-land.
Vinh Moc Tunnels
Vinh Moc Tunnels are the highlight of the day. When heavy bombing made life above ground impossible, villagers dug a tunnel system by hand between 1965 and 1967, running for around two kilometres on three levels and opening onto the beach and the hillside. Whole families lived here for years, with tiny family alcoves, wells, a meeting hall and a maternity room where children were born underground.
With your guide you follow the lit main passages for about 1.5 hours, then visit the museum and the cliff-top exits facing the sea. Ceilings are low and some sections are narrow and humid, so comfortable shoes matter. Is Vinh Moc worth visiting? For most travellers it is the most moving stop on any Vinh Moc Tunnels day trip from Hue. Vinh Moc Tunnels opening hours are roughly 07:00 to 17:00 daily; we arrive in the afternoon and are back in Hue around 18:00.
