Full Description
Datanla Waterfall and Its Hidden Canyon
Datanla Waterfall lies in pine and jungle forest just off the Prenn Pass, about 5 to 7 km south of central Dalat. Its name is often explained as coming from a local highland language and meaning water under the leaves, a good description of the stream that tumbles through the green gorge. The upper falls are a popular sightseeing spot, but the real adventure lies further down, in a quiet canyon of boulders, pools and cascades that most visitors never see.
How to get to Datanla Waterfall is easy on this day: we pick you up in Dalat and drive around 30 minutes to the canyoning base camp. Dalat sits at about 1,500 m, so even on sunny days the river water feels fresh, which is why wetsuits are provided. Expect a full day outdoors, with short hikes between the obstacles and plenty of time on the rock and in the water.
Base Camp Training and the First Abseils
Every Dalat canyoning day begins with a careful briefing at base camp. Your instructors fit you with a harness, helmet, life jacket and canyoning shoes, then teach the basic technique of abseiling: leaning back, walking down the rock and controlling your speed with the rope. You practise on a small slope until you feel confident, and the guides explain the signals and safety rules used in the canyon.
The first real challenge is a dry cliff of around 18 m. It looks high from the top, but most people find that once they lean back and take the first steps, fear turns into a big smile. You then repeat a short descent beside a waterfall to get used to the feeling of water around you. Instructors stay at the top and bottom of every drop, so beginners are never on their own.
Zipline, Lazy River and the Second Cliff
Further down the canyon you reach a Tyrolean traverse, where you clip into a cable and glide over the river on a zipline of around 70 m, with the forest rushing past. It is one of the most photogenic moments of the day, and the instructors are ready with the camera, because photos of your adventure are included.
Next comes a 15 m dry cliff and then a gentle stretch of lazy river, where you float on your back in your life jacket, look up at the canopy and rest your arms. Is canyoning in Dalat safe? With modern equipment, trained instructors and a minimum height rule of 150 cm set by the waterfall management, it is run with safety as the priority; you only need to listen carefully and follow instructions.
Natural Water Slides and Picnic Lunch
Over thousands of years the river has polished parts of the canyon into smooth rock chutes, perfect natural water slides. You lie back, cross your arms over your chest, hold your breath and let the current carry you down into a deep pool, before bobbing up laughing. Instructors show you the right position first, and you can repeat the slides if you enjoy them.
Lunch is a picnic on the rocks above the highest waterfall, with a Vietnamese baguette, tropical fruit, hot cocoa and purified water, surrounded by forest and the sound of falling water. It is a welcome break to warm up and dry off in the sun, and a chance to compare stories with the rest of the group before the toughest part of the day begins.
The 25 m Waterfall and the Washing Machine
The final challenge is the most dramatic: an abseil down a waterfall about 25 m high and 20 m wide, with the water pouring over your shoulders as you step down the rock. Then comes the washing machine, a shorter fall that spins you around in white water before pushing you out into the pool below. Both need a cool head more than strength, and the instructors guide every step.
The best time for canyoning in Dalat is the drier season from about December to April, when the water is clearer and the rock less slippery. During the rainy months, roughly May to November, the river runs higher, so the instructors may adjust the route for safety. After the last descent, a short hike leads back to base camp, where you can take a shower and change before we drive you back to Dalat.
