Full Description
Hon Mun Marine Protected Area
Most scuba diving in Nha Trang takes place around Hon Mun, a rocky island about 10 km southeast of the city. Its name means Ink Island, after the dark rock of its cliffs. In 2001 the waters around Hon Mun and its neighbouring islands became Vietnam's first marine protected area, created to protect some of the richest coral reefs in the country, and fishing is restricted in its core zones.
The sheltered coves on the island's western and southern sides, with gentle slopes of hard coral and sandy patches, are ideal for first dives. The boat ride from the port takes about 40 minutes, with views of Hon Tre and the long cable car line behind you. If you are wondering whether a Nha Trang scuba dive is worth it, these calm reefs are among the easiest and most colourful places in Vietnam to try.
What happens on a discovery dive
A discovery dive is a supervised first taste of scuba diving, not a course. On board, the dive master explains how the equipment works, how to breathe through the regulator, how to clear water from your mask and how to equalise your ears, using simple hand signals. You then practise at the surface and in shallow water until you feel relaxed.
Underwater, your dive master stays with you one-to-one, holding on to you if needed, controlling your buoyancy, depth and direction, so all you need to do is breathe slowly and look around. Dives stay shallow, within the safe limits for beginners, and last around 20 to 30 minutes each. You do not even need to be a strong swimmer, though being comfortable in the water helps.
What you can see underwater in Nha Trang
The reefs around Hon Mun shelter hard corals such as table, brain and staghorn corals, soft corals and sea fans, and a busy mix of reef fish: parrotfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, damselfish and colourful wrasses. Clownfish hide in their anemones, and if you look closely you may spot nudibranchs, sea cucumbers, starfish and blue-spotted rays on the sand.
Visibility is usually around 5 to 15 metres, best on calm, sunny mornings. Your dive master will point out creatures and help you take your time, and the second dive at a different site usually feels much easier than the first. Please do not touch the coral or the animals; the protected area relies on visitors to keep it healthy.
Your day on the dive boat
The day runs at a relaxed pace. After the first dive you rest on deck with coffee, tea, fruit and Vietnamese rice cake while the boat moves to the second site. A barbecue lunch is served during the trip, with grilled dishes, rice, vegetables and fruit; drinks with lunch are not included apart from what is served at break time.
Halal-certified food is limited on Nha Trang boat trips, although the city itself has a few Indian and halal-friendly restaurants. Seafood and vegetarian dishes are easy to arrange: tell us when booking if you need vegetarian or no-pork food. Photos and videos underwater are not included, but you can ask the crew on the day whether a photo package is available.
Best time to dive in Nha Trang and practical tips
The best time to visit Nha Trang for diving is from February to September, when the sea is usually calm and the water clearest, with the best conditions from March to August. The rainy season from October to December brings rough seas, lower visibility and occasional storms, and trips can be changed or cancelled for safety.
How to get to the Nha Trang dive sites: we pick you up at your hotel in the city centre and take you to the port, from where the boat sails to Hon Mun. Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR) is about 35 to 45 minutes from the city. Avoid flying for at least 12 to 18 hours after diving, so plan your dive day before your flight, and bring your passport or ID card.
