Full Description
Hon Ba mountain and its forests
Hon Ba is a forested mountain rising to about 1,578 metres west of Nha Trang, and much of it is protected as a nature reserve. Its slopes are covered in tropical evergreen forest, with tall trees, bamboo, ferns and clear streams tumbling over granite rocks, and the summit was used as a cool hill station in the early 20th century. Its lower foothills, a drive of roughly an hour from the city, are where this adventure takes place.
The cooler, greener air of the forest is a welcome change from the coast, and the scenery is very different from what most visitors see in Nha Trang. If you are looking for things to do in Nha Trang away from the beach, a day in the Hon Ba foothills combines nature, adrenaline and a refreshing swim in one trip.
The jungle quad ride
Before you start, the team explains how the quad works: throttle, brakes, steering and how to tackle slopes and water. You then do a trial run on a practice track until you feel confident. The main ride lasts 75 to 90 minutes and follows forest trails over dirt, rocks and roots, through shallow stream crossings and up and down rugged hills, always behind a guide who sets the pace.
The ride starts slowly and builds up as the group gains confidence, so beginners can enjoy it as much as experienced riders. Expect to get muddy and splashed, especially after rain. Drivers must be at least 16 years old, and the guide stops regularly so you can rest, take photos and enjoy the forest views.
The zipline canopy course
In the default combo option, you also take on a zipline canopy course of 45 to 60 minutes. Wearing a harness and helmet, and clipped to safety lines throughout, you glide from platform to platform high above the forest floor, with views over the treetops and the mountain slopes.
Instructors give a full briefing and check every piece of equipment before you start, and they accompany the group across the course. It is an exciting experience for anyone who is comfortable with heights, though not suitable for those with a fear of heights or vertigo. Many guests do the zipline first, then the quad ride, but the order may change on the day depending on the group.
Forest streams, lunch and time to relax
After the activities, lunch is served at the park according to the daily menu, with soft drinks. Vietnamese dishes with rice, vegetables and meat or fish are typical; halal-certified food is limited, so tell us when booking if you need vegetarian or no-pork food and we will pass the request on.
There is also free time to cool off in the clear forest streams and natural pools, take photos and use the park's public facilities, including changing areas. Companions who do not want to ride can book a separate option with the transfer and lunch only, so the whole family can come along and relax in the forest while others ride.
Pickup times and the best time to go
How to get to the Hon Ba foothills from Nha Trang: the trip includes a return shuttle in an air-conditioned vehicle from central Nha Trang, with pickups at around 7:00, 8:00 or 11:30 and returns at about 12:30, 15:00 or 17:30 respectively, give or take 20 minutes for traffic. Separate options with pickup from the Cam Ranh area are also available.
The best time to visit for a jungle quad ride is the dry season from January to August, when trails are firmer and streams are clear. From September to December, rain makes the trails muddier and more challenging, and activities may be paused in storms or flooding; we will contact you if your trip needs to change.
