Full Description
Lan Ha Bay and the Cat Ba archipelago
Lan Ha Bay spreads along the eastern shore of Cat Ba Island in Hai Phong, just south of Ha Long Bay. It shares the same limestone towers and arches but feels wilder, with small sandy coves, floating fish farms and far fewer boats. Since 2023 the Cat Ba archipelago has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ha Long Bay, recognising that the two bays are one great karst landscape.
Is Lan Ha Bay worth visiting instead of Ha Long Bay? If you want quiet water, swimming and a slower pace, yes; many travellers who have seen both prefer it. A Lan Ha Bay cruise from Hanoi takes roughly the same time as a Ha Long cruise, and on a small boat like this one the guide can choose sheltered spots away from the bigger ships.
Kayaking and swimming in hidden lagoons
The heart of the cruise is time on the water. The boat anchors in calm corners of the bay where the cliffs close around a lagoon, and you take a kayak out at your own pace, paddling under overhangs and past tiny beaches that are only reachable by sea. The guide stays close and points out the best route according to the tide.
When the weather is warm, roughly May to October, the water is pleasant for swimming straight from the boat or from a quiet beach. In cooler months many guests simply kayak and enjoy the views. Life jackets are provided. The small number of guests on board means you rarely wait for a kayak and the lagoons feel peaceful even in high season.
Viet Hai Village inside Cat Ba National Park
Viet Hai is a small farming village tucked in a green valley inside Cat Ba National Park, ringed by forested limestone peaks. For a long time it could be reached only by boat or on foot, and it still has a slow rhythm of rice fields, fruit gardens and old stone houses. The boat stops at Viet Hai pier, and you ride a bicycle along a quiet lane into the village.
Once there you have time to stroll, meet local families and enjoy a relaxing foot massage before cycling back to the boat. The ride is flat and easy, suitable for most guests who can ride a bicycle. Cat Ba National Park, founded in 1986, protects forests, mangroves and caves, and is the only home of the rare golden-headed Cat Ba langur.
A night aboard a small cruise boat
Your cabin is private, air-conditioned and has its own bathroom; groups of three are given a family cabin with a double and a single bed, and solo travellers pay a single-cabin supplement. The boat has only a few cabins, so the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, and the guide has time for everyone.
In the late afternoon the crew runs a cooking demonstration of a classic Vietnamese dish, then dinner is served as the light fades over the islands. After dinner you can try squid fishing with a lamp and a line, or join the karaoke on board. The boat spends the night at anchor in sheltered water, and the morning starts with breakfast surrounded by limestone cliffs.

Which meals are included?
All meals on the programme are served on board, from lunch on day one to the final meal on day two. Vegetarian dishes are prepared on request; soft drinks are extra.

Yes, this option includes return limousine van transfer from your hotel in Hanoi Old Quarter. The Cat Ba option includes hotel pickup in Cat Ba Town.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
The programme is shared and depends on tides and weather, but every activity is optional and the small group keeps the pace relaxed.
How long is the cruise?
Two days and one night, from 07:00 pickup on day one to about 16:15 back in Hanoi on day two.
Is it suitable for children or reduced mobility?
Families with children are welcome. Boarding, kayaking and the bicycle ride need some mobility, so the cruise is not ideal for wheelchair users; tell us your needs and we will advise.

Passport or a copy, swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, a light jacket, comfortable shoes and any medication. A small bag is easiest on a small boat.
