Full Description

Hon Mun Marine Park

Hon Mun is a rocky island in the south of Nha Trang Bay, named for the dark, ebony-coloured cliffs that drop straight into the sea. In 2001 the waters around it became Vietnam's first marine protected area, which limits fishing and keeps the reefs among the healthiest along the central coast. The island itself is uninhabited, so all the interest lies below the surface.

On this Hon Mun snorkelling tour the speedboat leaves the tourist port at Cau Da and reaches the marine park in roughly 25 to 30 minutes. How to get to Hon Mun is simple: it is only reachable by boat, which is why a guided day trip with pickup is the easiest way. Snorkelling usually lasts around an hour on the sheltered side of the island, where the water is calmest.

Snorkelling in Nha Trang Bay: what you see underwater

The reefs at Hon Mun are shallow enough to enjoy with a mask and life jacket, so you do not need any diving experience. Expect branching and table corals, soft corals swaying in the current, sea anemones with clownfish, parrotfish, butterflyfish, giant clams and black sea urchins wedged between the rocks. On a clear day you can see several metres down from the surface.

Visibility is usually best from March to August, when the sea is calm and the sun is high. Our guide gives a short briefing before you enter the water and stays close to the group. Optional extras such as scuba diving or sea walking can be added on the spot at extra cost, but the included snorkelling is more than enough for most guests.

Hon Mieu fishing village

Hon Mieu, also called Tri Nguyen Island, sits just across the water from Cau Da port and is home to a long-established fishing community. Floating fish farms, colourful wooden boats and simple stilt houses line the shore, giving a real look at how families on the bay earn their living from the sea.

Here you try a traditional fishing experience with local equipment, then sit down to a freshly prepared Vietnamese lunch, often with fish and seafood, rice, vegetables and seasonal fruit. Vegetarian meals are available if you tell us in advance, and we can ask for a no-pork meal. The stop lasts around an hour and a half, a relaxed break between the snorkelling and the afternoon island.

Hon Tam Island mud bath

Hon Tam is a green island in the south-east of the bay with a sandy beach and calm water. Its mud bath area uses warm, mineral-rich mud in which you soak for a while before rinsing off, a popular way to relax the muscles after a morning in the sea. Many travellers search for a Nha Trang mud bath on an island day trip, and this option combines both in one outing.

The afternoon on Hon Tam lasts around two hours, with time to swim or rest on the beach after the bath. Bring a swimsuit you do not mind getting muddy and a spare towel. If you prefer a quieter beach afternoon instead, the Bai Soi, Bai Tranh and Mini Beach options follow the same morning programme.

Best time to visit Nha Trang islands

Nha Trang has a long dry season, and the best time to visit the islands is from January to August, when the sea is usually flat and the water clear. From September to December the rainy season brings heavier showers and rougher water; boats still run on good days, but the programme can be shortened or changed for safety.

Is Hon Mun worth visiting? For anyone who enjoys the sea, yes: it is the easiest place on this coast to see a living reef without diving. Book a day or two ahead in peak months, keep the evening before light, and plan this island tour early in your stay so there is a spare day if the weather intervenes.
