Full Description
Cai Rang Floating Market
Cai Rang Floating Market lies on the Can Tho River about 6 km from the centre of Can Tho, the largest city of the Mekong Delta. It is a wholesale market: farmers and traders arrive by boat before dawn to sell pineapples, watermelons, pumpkins, sweet potatoes and every kind of tropical fruit, which buyers then carry to markets across the south. Many families live on their boats for weeks at a time, sleeping in hammocks under the deck and cooking on small stoves.
Look out for the cay beo, tall bamboo poles from which each boat hangs a sample of what it sells, a pineapple for pineapples, a pumpkin for pumpkins, so buyers can spot them from afar. The best time to visit Cai Rang Floating Market is between about 06:00 and 09:00, when trading is at its peak, which is why this tour leaves so early. By late morning the market quietens down.
Breakfast on the Water and the Noodle Workshop
Once on your wooden boat, you are served breakfast while the boat gently rocks among the traders, either a bowl of hu tieu, the Mekong's famous rice-noodle soup, or a crusty banh mi sandwich. Then you can climb to the upper deck with a cup of strong Vietnamese coffee and watch the colourful scene from above. Your guide takes you aboard a fruit seller's boat and translates as the family talks about daily life on the river.
Next you step into a small floating workshop where a local family makes hu tieu by hand. You see rice soaked and ground into a batter, steamed into thin sheets on a cloth over a fire, dried on bamboo racks and cut into noodles. You are welcome to try spreading a sheet yourself. After about 30 minutes the boat carries you back to shore.
Son Islet (Con Son)
Son Islet is a small green island in the Hau River, the larger branch of the Mekong, a short drive and boat ride from Cai Rang. Its families have opened their homes and gardens to visitors as a community project, so the visit feels personal and relaxed. You see a floating fish farm where fish are raised in cages beneath the house and jump for food, and you can try a gentle fish foot massage, which makes everyone laugh.
You then wander through orchards to pick seasonal fruit such as rambutan, longan or guava, cross a narrow 'monkey bridge' made of bamboo or wood like the locals, and learn how to make puffed rice, a crunchy sweet snack. Lunch on the islet is a 'flying menu': each household cooks one dish and together they make a shared meal. When the tide allows, you can finish with a quiet rowing boat ride along the canals.
Can Tho and the Journey from Ho Chi Minh City
Can Tho lies about 170 km south-west of Ho Chi Minh City, and many travellers ask how to get to Cai Rang Floating Market in a single day. Thanks to the new expressway the drive now takes around 3 hours, and leaving at 05:00 means you arrive while the market is busiest. The road crosses the wide branches of the Mekong on long bridges and passes rice fields and orchards along the way.
A Cai Rang Floating Market day trip from Ho Chi Minh City is a long day, about 12 hours, but it lets you see the real working market without staying overnight. The dry season from December to April brings sunny skies and calm water, while from August to November the delta is in flood season, when the fields are green and the canals full. We return to your hotel in the late afternoon or early evening.

Can we change the itinerary or the pace?

Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person, with a child rate. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes, from hotels in Districts 1, 3 and 4 (not Binh Thanh District), with drop-off at the end of the day.

How long is the tour?
About 12 hours, from 05:00 to the late afternoon or early evening.

What should I bring?

When is the best time of year?
December to April is dry and sunny. August to November is flood season, when the delta is at its greenest. The market runs all year.
