Ninh Binh

Plan Ninh Binh with Haqqi Tours: day tours, private airport transfers, attraction tickets and packages, run by our own team and confirmed on WhatsApp in Arabic or English.

The rowing boat slides out from the jetty with barely a sound, and within minutes the world narrows to water, rock and sky. Limestone mountains covered in green rise straight from the rice fields, the river slips into a dark cave mouth and out again into another hidden valley, and the rower, sometimes steering with her feet, points out a small temple on a bank of reeds. Herons lift from the paddies, and the only sound is the dip of the oars.

Ninh Binh at first sight

Ninh Binh lies about two hours south of Hanoi, where the Red River Delta meets a landscape of limestone karsts, rivers and caves often called Ha Long Bay on land. The Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the area holds Hoa Lu, Vietnam's ancient capital of the tenth century, as well as great pagodas, wetlands rich in birds and the country's oldest national park.

Why include Ninh Binh in your itinerary?

  • Ha Long Bay on land. Boat rides through Trang An and Tam Coc glide between towering karsts, under caves and past rice fields, a landscape of rare beauty protected by UNESCO.
  • Ancient capital and grand pagodas. Hoa Lu was Vietnam's capital a thousand years ago, and its temples still stand among the mountains, while the vast Bai Dinh pagoda and the cave pagoda of Bich Dong reveal the region's spiritual life.
  • Viewpoints, wetlands and forests. Climb to the dragon on top of Mua Cave for a sweeping view of Tam Coc, glide through the Van Long wetlands by bamboo boat, and explore the ancient trees of Cuc Phuong National Park.

Signature experiences in Ninh Binh

Trang An Boat Ride

The Trang An boat ride is the highlight of Ninh Binh: two to three hours in a small rowing boat along clear rivers, through a series of low caves and past temples on quiet islands, surrounded by limestone peaks. Several routes are offered, each with different caves and temples. Boats seat a few passengers, life jackets are provided, and we arrange tickets with a private guide and transfer.

Tam Coc and Bich Dong Pagoda

Tam Coc, meaning three caves, is a boat trip on the Ngo Dong River through three natural caves and between rice fields, which turn gold in late May and early June. Nearby, Bich Dong Pagoda is built on three levels into the side of a mountain, linked by stone stairs and a cave. Together they make a beautiful half day in the countryside.

Mua Cave Viewpoint

From the foot of Mua mountain, a stone staircase of about five hundred steps climbs to a summit crowned by a stone dragon, with one of the finest views in northern Vietnam over the river, the rice fields and the karsts of Tam Coc. The climb is steep but short, and best in the early morning or late afternoon light. Bring water and good shoes.

Hoa Lu Ancient Capital

Hoa Lu was the capital of Vietnam in the tenth century, chosen for the natural protection of its mountains. Today its two main temples, dedicated to the first kings of the Dinh and Early Le dynasties, stand in a quiet valley with carved stone dragons, wooden halls and ancient courtyards. Our guides explain the story of the early Vietnamese state as you visit.

Bai Dinh Pagoda and Van Long

Bai Dinh is one of the largest Buddhist complexes in Vietnam, with grand halls, a giant bronze Buddha, a towering bell and a long corridor lined with hundreds of carved arhat statues. To the north, the Van Long nature reserve is a peaceful wetland where bamboo boats glide among reeds and karsts, with birds and rare langurs on the cliffs. Our private tours by vehicle combine both.

Neighbourhoods and quarters to know in Ninh Binh

Tam Coc

Tam Coc is a village at the foot of the karsts, with small hotels, homestays and restaurants beside the river and rice fields. It is the most popular base for visitors, close to the Tam Coc boat ride, Bich Dong Pagoda and Mua Cave. Evenings are calm, with views of the mountains from many rooms and simple local restaurants nearby.

Trang An and Hoa Lu

The area around Trang An and Hoa Lu has resort hotels and boutique stays set among lakes and mountains, close to the Trang An boat pier and the ancient capital. It suits travellers who want a quiet, scenic stay with resort facilities. Restaurants are fewer than in Tam Coc, so many hotels offer their own dining.

Ninh Binh City

Ninh Binh City is the urban centre, with the railway station on the north-south line, markets, a city lake and hotels of every level. It is practical for travellers arriving by train or continuing south, about fifteen minutes from Tam Coc and Trang An. It feels more local, with less of the countryside atmosphere.

Van Long and Gia Vien

North of Trang An, the countryside around Van Long and Gia Vien is quiet and green, with a few resorts beside lakes and wetlands. Staying here means peaceful mornings, birds over the reeds and easy access to the Van Long boat rides. It is a short drive from the main sights, so private transfers are useful.

How long to stay in Ninh Binh and how to pair it

Recommended stay

We recommend two nights in Ninh Binh. Spend one day on the Trang An boat ride and at Hoa Lu, and one at Tam Coc, Bich Dong Pagoda and the Mua Cave viewpoint. With a third night, add Bai Dinh Pagoda and the Van Long wetlands, or Cuc Phuong National Park.

How to pair it

Ninh Binh pairs naturally with Hanoi, about two hours away by road or train, and with Ha Long Bay, about three hours away by expressway. A seven-day trip combines Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay. In ten days, add Sapa. A fourteen-day journey can link Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Hue and Hoi An.

Best time to visit Ninh Binh and the rhythm of the day

Best months

The best months for Ninh Binh are March to May and September to November, with mild weather and green or golden fields; the rice in Tam Coc is golden in late May and early June. Summer is hot and humid with heavy showers. January to March brings spring festivals and busy pagodas, and winter can be cool and grey.

The daily rhythm

Days in Ninh Binh start early, as boat rides and the Mua Cave climb are best before the midday heat and the tour coaches from Hanoi. Lunch is often a local meal in Tam Coc, followed by a rest. Late afternoon is ideal for a viewpoint or a second boat ride in soft light, and evenings are calm in the village.

On-the-ground logistics in Ninh Binh

Arrival

Ninh Binh has no airport; Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi is about two hours away by expressway. Trains on the north-south line stop at Ninh Binh station, about two to two and a half hours from Hanoi, with onward links to Hue and Da Nang. We issue train tickets and arrange private transfers from Hanoi, the airport or the station to your hotel.

Getting around

The main sights of Ninh Binh are spread over a wide area of countryside, from Tam Coc in the south to Trang An, Hoa Lu and Bai Dinh in the north. Taxis are available but less frequent in rural areas. A private car with driver arranged by our team is the most comfortable way to combine the boat rides, pagodas and viewpoints in one day.

Local etiquette tip

Ninh Binh's pagodas and temples are active places of worship, so cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes in prayer halls where others do, and speak quietly. On the boats, stay seated and keep your hands inside on low caves. Ask before photographing people, and tip your boat rower if you are happy with the ride, though it is not obligatory.
