Full Description

Bai Dinh Pagoda, Vietnam's great Buddhist complex

Bai Dinh Pagoda rises on a forested hillside about 15 km from Ninh Binh city. The original Bai Dinh is a small, centuries-old pagoda set in caves near the top of the hill; beside it, a vast new complex was built from 2003 in traditional style. Its long covered corridors hold hundreds of carved stone arhat statues, each with its own expression, and stairways lead up to great halls with giant gilded bronze Buddha statues and a bell tower housing a huge bronze bell.

An electric car carries you from the car park to the entrance area, and your guide then leads you through the gates, corridors and halls at your own pace, usually about two hours. From the upper terraces you look over hills, lakes and the tall stupa tower. Is Bai Dinh Pagoda worth visiting? For its scale, craftsmanship and peaceful setting, most travellers say yes. Long clothing that covers shoulders and knees is required.

Trang An boat ride through the caves

After lunch you continue to the Trang An Landscape Complex, about 20 minutes from Bai Dinh. Here local villagers row small sampans along the Sao Khe River and its channels, through a chain of limestone water caves and past temples that stand on small islands. The scenery, deep green water between steep cliffs covered in tropical plants, has earned Trang An the nickname Ha Long Bay on land.

The boat trip lasts about two to three hours depending on the route and the pace of your rower. The boats are shared, so you may sit with a few other visitors, while your guide waits at the pier or joins you. The best time to visit Trang An is in the morning or late afternoon on weekdays, when the piers are calmer; with a private car we can adjust the timing to avoid the busiest moments.

Trang An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

In 2014 UNESCO inscribed the Trang An Landscape Complex as Vietnam's first mixed natural and cultural World Heritage Site. The limestone towers and cave systems were formed over millions of years, and archaeologists have found traces of people living in these caves for tens of thousands of years, as sea levels rose and fell. Later, the area protected Hoa Lu, the capital of Vietnam in the tenth century, which lies just next to it.

Along the boat route you see small temples dedicated to local spirits and historical figures of the region, some reached by stone steps from the water. Kingfishers, herons and water birds feed along the banks, and the silence inside the caves, broken only by dripping water and the oars, is unforgettable. If you are looking for a private Trang An tour from Hanoi, this day combines the boat ride with Bai Dinh at your own rhythm.

Your private day from Hanoi to Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh lies about 90 to 100 km south of Hanoi, around two hours by expressway. On a private day trip the car and guide are only for you, so you pick the start time between 7:00 and 8:30, stop for coffee or photos when you like and spend more time where you enjoy it most. It is the easiest way for families with children or older relatives to see Ninh Binh in comfort.

The best time to go is from September to November and from March to early June, when the weather is mild and the rice fields are green or golden. Summer is hot with short heavy showers, so an early start helps. Halal food is limited in Ninh Binh; lunch includes vegetarian and fish dishes, and Hanoi has halal restaurants for dinner when you return around 18:00.
